Among those w1bo went to Charleston Thanksgiving to see the Carolina-Citadel gam-e are the fol lowing: Purdy, Flinn, McCrady, Hughes, Townsend, Boggs, Fitz simons, Hazard, White, Bouchier, Hamp White, Duncan Heyward, Gonzales, Hoey, B. J. White and Smith. * * * The following students spent Thanksgiving at home: "Stick" Wil son, W. L. Marshall, Moise, W. H. Bowman, Mullins, Kirkland, Wood ruff, Kollock, Sligh, Alexander brothers, Speed and Co., and Brin Soil. * * * Mr. J. I. Hazard attended the Thanksgiving ball in Georgetown. Mr. "Jule" Boggs, of whom ve C) have several volumes of (lope, was on the campus much of last week. He went down to Charleston with the "boys," and returned Sunday night. He left Columbia for Pickens Tuesday afternoon. The only regret C3 about Jule's visits is that they are too short and to far betwoen. 0 The following alumni were wel comed to the campus last week: Per rin, Ligon, Jeffreys, Marion, Kinard. * * * The entire student body extends its sincere sympathy to Mr. Roger Heyward in his recent bereavement. * * * Mr. Dick Reeves spent a very happy Thanksgiving in Abbeville? * * * Mr. "Neps" McCrady reports sev eral "big 'uns" in Charleston. We understand that he is making a good show towards winning the medal of the Daughters of -the Confed eracy. * * * Mr. Mack Simkins surprised us when he stalked into the game (at Topshe's) a few (lays ago. His de parture "hurt" many of the boys. * * * Dr. Mitchell spoke in Orangeburg last Tuesday. On Wednesday he went to Laurens to make an address. * * * Prof. Yates Snowden went over (to Georgetown Tuesday, where lie addressed the Daughters of the Con federacy, who are holding their an nual convention. He returned to the city Thursday morning. * * * Mr. Christie Benet addressed the Y. M. C. A. on Wednesday night. His .excellent address was heard by a large number of students. * * * The following young ladies wvere Carolina sponsors at the Citadel-Car olina game on Thanksgiv-ing: Misses Wells, Simkins, Walker, Flinn, Jones, Marshall, DuBose, H-eyward, Moore. This promises to be a rich day. The speakers are among the most emincnt in America, and the sub jects happily fit into the life and history of South Carolina. Dr. S. A. Knapp is directing the immense demonstration farm work throughout the South. le is a phi losopher as well as a farmer, and attracts great throngs wherever lie speaks. Dr. W. H. Page is the editor of the World's Work, and a student of social progress. He tries to leeep up with the big tasks that the age has on hand. Prof. W. K. Tate is giving him self Wholly to the enrichment of rural life in South Carolina as the State Inspector of Country Schools. He goes into every nook and corner of the State as an educational en gineer. He has just returned from a tour of the North, -the West and Canada, studying all the most reocnt develo)ments in country life. In his efforts for the improvement of the country schools, lie is focusing all the light that other States and even foreign countri,es have to throw u)on local conditions. Prof. W. -1. Hand for four years has directed, with wisdom, the devel opment of high schools in South Car olina. When he began this work these schools wvere few, and now there are about 150. The growth of the high schools is perhaps the most signal fact in the history of the State during the past decade, for they have put energy into the schools be low and the colleges above. They have thrown wide open the door of opportunity for many a country boy and girl who otherwise could never have gotten beyond the common school. Prof. Hiand is ai attractive speaker. For the past few years lie has beein teaching at the Universi-ty of Virginia summer school, and, by reason of h.is visits to leading insti tutiois of learning in this country, lie is well able to present in a straight forward way the construc tive purposes of the founders of the University of South Carolina. January 12th next, will mark the one hundred and tenth anniver sary of the pounding of the college, and the prospect is for a memorable occasion. Dr. Joynes Makes Worthy Dona tion.
