A Hunt.
Aycock, with joyous Hart, crew to
the dawn, which, with Silvery Green
streaks was silhouetting the Furse in
the east, heightening the Black som
berness around. With the crowing
of other Cox the village of De
Treville awoke. The chief Officer of
the baron's household, the Marshall,
was the first one astir. Dressing
quickly, lie proceeded Wright away
to pull vigorously the Bell Cordes,
to wake the whole household, for
this was the day for the great hunt.
Every Mann arose with the ut
most Speed, and soon the Eaves
rattled with the clang of the
-weapons to be used in the hunt.
The Cook, with Moorehead work
than usual, did not delay things. All
had, with misgivings, left the warm
Harth, and now every Hunter was
mounted and ready to ride to the
place of the shooting. The tall,
White horse, as being the best Sad
ler, was allotted to the Barron.
They took the Weston road, or
that leading in the direction of
Veinberg. The Coats they were
Waring were of many Hlughes; one
wore oveRawls, one Legg of which
garment was torn, and, on the whole,
they were rather a Motley crev.
And though they could Reed signs
of rain in the sky, they were not
disheartenied, for they had hunted
in all Weathers.
After passing through a great For
rest, they came upon an open piece
of land, bordered by two rippling
Brooks, which ground in the Sum
mer before must hav-e been a beau
tiful Grecnfield. They kept on till
they reached their destination, a
lonely Moore, where only a few
bushes, almost Barron of leaves,
were to b)e seen. But they sawv
nothing of their game, and only (dis
coveredl sonme animal's burrow.
One 01(1 gentleman of the p)arty
wvas confident that there wvas a
H-erin it, and, with Sligh mov'e
mients, lie wenit to the'opening and
b)egan to Perrin Koon-Wise. HIe
was Nott Able to Seay anything,
when, suddenly, the rabbit was out,
andl was followed by a short and un
* successful Chase. "Great Scott," one
of the Fellers exclaimed, "that rab
bit Ransoni, elh?"
Condemning the escaped cause of
the hase to Purr1tionn. they turned
their attention to the clear Poole, not
very far off. But since it was not the
season for fishing, what were they to
do? However, for excitement, the
Porter proposed a het that he would
Wad-e across this fairly deep pond,
if a sufficient inducement was
raised. This was arranged and he
started off, exclaiming, "Here's
where I pay the Miller and his
Kneece the rent I've Odom a year!"
He carried a stout Cain, andl had
been careful to start wlhere the
Banks were the least distance across,
for the wateer was almost freezing.
In fact, i.t had been growing colder
Daly, and for the past FortKnight
.traces of ice had been seen on sev
eral ponds. At last lie was across,
and began to Stork stiffly ip the
farther side, and though lie was
greeted by his misgiving betters
with the pleasant words: "A fool
Robbs nobody of their pleasures, and
Gaines none for himself," he had
won the bCt.
They now start-ed home. On the
way, they began to blame their lack
of sport on the diRector of the hunt
-a Small man with a Parrot-shaped
nose. He protested his innocence,
and asserted th-eir guilt in his Bass
voice, damaging the King's English
the while. "I seem to be getting
all the blame," lie said, "but Owen
to the fact that wlien those Martins
fl-ev over, you wouldn't see them,
Norwood fire. I'm not responsible
for the size of the ganiebag, 1
Sawyer! 'Twasn't me Lide about
the game ve'd kill." The accusers
were sil-ent.
Despite thcir almost empty game
bags, and the fact that they were now
climbing a Hill that was Steep and
Stoney, the party was in good spirits
-the majority being determined,
on arriviig at the Barron's to get
Fuller for the past abstention, or at
least enjoy Moise. D. C. H., Jr.
"The Unfulfilled Prophesy."
Low! the Clemson Tiger growls,
Moving to and fro,
Brandishing his striped tail,
He now scents the foe.
CrOuching lov upon the ground,
Gleams his glassy eye;
From his nose the hot breath swells
In his angry cry.
Right before his face there rings,
Shays, a thrilling note,
And now straight the Gamecock
comes,
With his ruffled throat;
Pluming his dark, shining breast,
Brandishing his spurs,
H-urling back the loosened dlirt,
Battle lhe incurs.
Tiger, growl you (heel) and long,
IHav.e your last threat out,
For e'er noon your crest must bowv
To dlefeat andl rout;
Purple andl Gold stripes must fall,
Trailing in the dust,
'Fore the Garnet and the Black,
And the Ganmecock's thrust.
"Chicken."
Cook and his fiddle;
Monash bays at the moon.
Aycock laughed wvhen he sawv fresh
Lidle,
And booze got awvay with soph
B rohun.
