Her friend, Mrs. Jones, who was a
devout student of the Bible, suggested
that out of respect for the aged mother
cat, the kitten be called Benl, "the child
of lier old age, a little one."
And so it caie to pass that Ben
gave birth to kittens. Mrs. Jones.
somewhat discomfited, after hearing
the news, hurried to Mrs. Smith's.
"What ?" she asked, "Ben has kit

Dr. Mitchell made an address in
Marion Friday evening, April 15th,
up1)on the anniversary of the establish
ment of the free library in that town.
His speech had as its subject what
men and women can do when they co
operate for the higher things of life
and was listened to by a large and ap
preciative audience. The Marion
correspondent of The State had a de
tailed account of Dr. Mitchell's speech
in Monday morning's paper, and re
viewed the address in a most flattering
manner.
Dr. Mitchell went to St. Matthew's
on Friday, returning to the University
that night.
Gridiron Fun.
The game was ended, and the noise
at last had died away, and now they
gathered up the boys, where they in
pieces lay. And one was hammered
in the ground by many a jolt and jar;
some fragments never iave been
found, they flew away so far. They
found a stack of tawny hair, some
fourteen cubits high; it was the half
back lying there, where he had crawled
to (lie. They placed the pieces on a
door and from the crimson field, that
hero then they gently bore, like soldieI
on his shield. The surgeon toiled the
live-long night above the gory wreck;
lie got the ribs adjusted right, the
wish-bone and the neck. ' He soldered
on the ears and toes, and got the spine
in place, and fixed a gutta-percha nose
uplon the mangled face. And then he
washed his hands and said: "I'm glad
that task is done!" The half-bac<
raised his fractured head and cried
