LAW ASSOCIATION.
Prof. M. Herndon Moore.
The sad death of Professor m.
Herndon Moore, the beloved Dean of
the Law Department of the Univer
sity, cast a pall of gloom, not only over
tle law classes, but over the entire
student body. He was one of nature's
noblemen, a true type of Southern
gentleman, and the impress of his life
will continue to mould and shape char
acter for many years to come.
Every student feels that he has sus
tained a personal loss, but there is a
measure of compensation in the eni
richment of his own life-the higher
conception of duty and manhood
which have come to him through con
tact with a personality so gentle, and
withal so manly.
The following resolutions were
adopted by the Senior amd Junior
classes and enrolled in the minutes of
the Law Association:
Be it resolved by the Senior and
Junior Law classes of the University
that we submit with deep pain and
sincere sorrow to the inscritable
Providence that has removed fronm
earthly activities Prof. M. Herndon
Moore, the Dean of the Law Depart
ment.
That we esteem it a great privilege
to have studied under his instruction,
to have felt the stimulus of his high
purpose, and have had the inspiration
of his exalted character.
That we shall ever cherish the lofty
ideals he has implanted within us, and
the memory of his kindly spirit, his
gentle courtesy and his gracious per
sonality.
That in his death this institution has
lost one of its most faithful and zeal
ous workers, the State Bar an expo
nent of its best and noblest traditions,
and we-both as students and as young
men-one of our best friends and
wisest counsellors.
That ve respect fully request that
space he reserved in the Garne/ and
Black for these resolutions (accompa

A rather sensational case was tried
before the Moot Court Friday night.
M\. R. McDonald, a highly respectedI
young muan, was indicted for the lar
ceny of a watch, the property of a fel
lowv stud(entt. It was qjuite a surprise,
as Mac., though he generally takes his
ownt time about things, has never
bcen known to take other p)eole's
time. There wvere miany sp)ecta
tors p)resent, most of whom,. in
chuding the jurymen, sympa
thized with the p)risoner. One juror
was so overcome in the course of the
trial that he wvent out to conceal his
emotions, bitt Sheriff WVideman ar
rested him and brought him back.
Judge Hammond warnedl him that if
the offense were rep)eatedl, the Court
wvould confiscate his per diem. (The
dlime was ten cents.) The Sherif
found it necessary to'suppress demoti
strations repeatedly, and several of
fenders were at length finled. Through
it all the defendant remiained com
posed, sustaining the fire of cross-ex
amiination with an unmarred counte
nance. He knew that if locked tip lie
woul not have to get up corporations
for the following Monday.
Solicitor Chapman was assisted in
the prosecution by Joseph Fromberg,
and the defenise was conducted by T.
1-. Moffatt and I. ). Carter. There
were several lively passages between
cotinsel, bit no casualties are reported,
and white-winged peace now broods
over the seat of war.
judge Hammond, in his charge,
showed great familiarity with the
crime of larceny-from a legal point
of view-and any juror in the panel
would now know a case of it anywhere
at a glance. After about fifteen min
utes of deliberation, a verdict of not
guilty was rendered, and the prisoner
wvas restored to lil)erty and loved ones.

Association adopted the joint resolu
tions regarding the death of Professor
Moore, passed by the Senior and
Junior Law classes. 'eliey are printed

A criminal case is on for Friday
night. and Judge Patla will preside.
