Between the absorbing study of subjective ideas in. regular collegiate work, and the engrossing (lealing with concrete things and their objective relations in actual life, there seems little connection. letwecn the two, the literary society in a measure supplics the link. Here the students, more or less familiar with a vast variety of practical affairs, expose the air castles of theory constructed by their opponents. And on the other hand, the insufficiency and inconsis tency of mere empiric information an( formula are power fully pointed out by minds trained to seek logical consis teicy, and habituated to seek and understan( the reason ror every rule and fact. There is a school of philosophy and of educators which looks solely at the motive, and if it be clothed with the moral character we call "good" then the end of education is accomplished. They say mere intellectuality is a dangerous instrument. "The more the ability, the greater the knave." The fallacy is intricate, th.ough none the less real and far-reaching. "The evil is wrought for want of thought, as well as want of feeling." Mere desire without ability to achieve is futile. On the other hand, ability being present, ordiinary chances are evenly in favor of the presence of the right desire, and if the right desires be instilled during the process of enpowering, the ideal is then approached.
