Taft Will See the University. Next Saturday the city of Colum gia, and the University in particular, is to enjoy the privilege of entertain ing their honored President, Taft. This is indeed an honor, one that is sought by many and obtained by few. He is to be in town only a few hours, but those few are of momentous con sequence, if not to Taft himself, at least to every member of this college. We are told that he is to drive around our campus road. This performance may last only a few minutes, but in that short time how many ideas, how many pleasant memories can be cre ated in his brain ? And may not these memories and impressions linger in his mind and be later recalled to our credit? The impressions that he will get depend entirely upon uis. We are to paint our own picture and it lies wholly with us what that picture will be. So, fellows, all we ask is that you will remember what you really are, and that you will represent yourself in your true light. We are all gentle men, but the demonstration of that fact lies mostly in our outward con duct. So it behooves us to act with all possible courtesy and hospitality toward the President and his party. Let tis not imagine for a moment that such conduct will pass unnoticed; that our college walls will be seen and for gotten. Taft is visiting us with a purpose, and no detail will escape his great mind. And, now, to close, let me beg you again, men, to appear what you are; show in every act, in all your outward conduct that you are true gentlemen of South Carolina. Remember that we will have among us our three hun dred and forty pound President, and that he has a heart and sympathy in proportion to his weight. To See the First Citizen of the Land. The following committee of the Faculty of the University of South Carolina has in charge all the local arrangements with reference to the reception of the white school popula tion of Columbia and the visiting col leges on the occasion of President Taft's visit next Saturday: Dr. M. W. Twitchell, chairman, Profs. L. T. Baker, Geo. McCutchen and H. C. Davis. This committee requests that all of the pupils and students of the various schools andi colleges be pres ent on the caipuis of the University of South Carolina not later than two o'clock on Saturday next. It will be necessary for all of them to enter on Sumter street, as all of the other en trances to the campus will be closed in order to insure ab)solute safety to the children within the camp)us. If tihe visiting colleges awvay from Columbia will indicate the train and hour of arrival to Dr. M. W. Twvitch elI, chairman of the local committee, he will have representatives at the station to conduct them at once to the camplus. This will b)e a great con venience to our hosts. T1he Univer sity is only a short distance from either station, and tihe schools con (ducted by a committeeman can easily comle direct from the station to' the ca!3npus. The following .commit tee has been appointed hy fhe student il,o(yo athe1 University of South Carolina to act as hosts on this occasion: Messrs. R. M. Cooper, D. E. Finley, Jr., F. S. Spigener, C. T. Graydon, M. M. Rec tor, T. K. Vassey, A. D. Oliphant, J. H. Hammond, B. J. White and W. B. Klugh. These gentlemen will do all in their power to render any assist ance on that occasion to the pupil and student visitors to the campus. Flags will be provided by the central com mittee for the great hbsts of students that are gathered on the campus for that day. Euphradians Elect Officers. The two Literary Societies have begun this year with their usual ear nestness and enthusiasm. The elec tion and initiation of new members being over, they have gotten down to hard work, and are putting in their time to good advantage. This feature of the University is conducted by the students alone, and it is highly complimentary to them to observe with what efliciency their work is done.
