FOOTBALL
Promptly at 3'45 p. im. on October
17th Referee Butler blew his whistle
for the commencement of the gridiron
battle between the teams representing
the State Universities of South Caro
lina and Georgia. About 700 enthus
iasts surrounded Herty field to wit
ness the struggle which proved so dis
astrous to the Carolinians. The Geor
gia rooters, under the leadership of
Paul Palmer, and with a full band,
occupied the center bleachers. The
students of Lucy Cobb Institute had
also a reserved section.
The weather was exceedingly warm
and .had a very bad effect on the play
ers. .Georgia was forced to substitute
players frequently to keep life in their
team, and when the game ended they
had used twenty-five men. Carolina
had few substitutes, and these were
not used until near the close of the
game, and even then were not able to
stop the terrific rushes of the Georgia
backfield. The game resolved itself
into a battle between experienced and
fresh players against inexperienced
and bttered men. Georgia out
weighed Carolina more than fifteen
pounds to the man, and this fact
should be taken into consideration
when reading the details. Carolina
was simply outclassed at every stage
of the game, and fought gamely
against overwhelming odds. The team
has nothing to be ashamed of, and the
experience gained overbalances the
loss of the game.
Georgia had a strong team, and

every man played well. However, a
few are due particular notice. Dela
perriere, their captain, played furious
ly and seldom failed to gain when
called upon. His defensive work was
of a high order. Derrick's punting
was a feature of the game. Wood
ruff, at quarter, ran his team in a
masterly manner and advanced the
ball himself. He made a spectacular
run of fifty yards. Newsome, S.
Hatcher and Peacock carried the ball
for considerable gains, and ran a
beautiful interference.
For Carolina it is a difficult matter
to pick stars under the disadvantage
ous circumstances. Dargan, at end,
played the most consistent game. He
was in almost every play, and made
several daring tackles. He made the
longest gain for Carolina, going
twelve yards on a forward pass. His
work was frequently commented on
by the spectators. Holmes worked
hard at all times; was most effective
in smashing Georgia's interference,
and kicked well, when it is remem
bered that he is not our regular
punter. Belser and Perrin aided in
stopping many line plays, and played
good defensive ball. DesPortes, in his
first game at quarter, showed up well
also. Mobley played hard ball at
centre.
The detail of the game follows:
FIRST HALV.
Carolina chooses to defend the
north goal. Forbes kicks to Holines,
who returns the ball twelve yards.
Dargan goes eight. Belser fumbles.
Perrin fails to gain and the ball goes
