W*daes lay, June IS. - - 1900 Thk people of the South can never be too ctrefal to preserve tie principles, a3 tar as possible, for which the Confederacy stood. These principles are constantly .recurring in oar national life. The Norih has always sought to overcome the natural advantages of tht South by centralizing everything at Washington. The latest effect to deprive th? States of rights reserved to them is the recooimeBdation that a constitutional amendment, reconaaeaded by the majority of the industrial commission, be adapted giving eoagress power to pass uniform labor legislation. The Southern States should be on their guard, and surrender nothing that in any way deprives them of the right to control their own affairs. It is very bard to account for souse men's judgment. There is G. Wait Whitman. Why should he think it possible for him to be elected Governor this year? By what process of reaiouing does he arrive at the conclusion that he stands any chance whatever of securing the n?m: nation in th8 primary? Is he ju-t running because he enpys it? Rational people will have a hard timo of it if they undertake to find why G. Walt is a candi date. The most rational analysis of G. Walt, probably, is that he is just J one of the ordinary cranks that now and then appear, or that office-seeking is a chronic disease with him. The fall of Pretoria :uiarka the end * of Ibe 8irusgle of the Boers for their ! independence. A guerilla warfare may be carried on for a while, but farther resistance to the 07erwbelming British will ansooat to nothing' Whatever raav be one'* opinion as to the rightfoasnei* of the Bo<;r ught, ie cannot fail to admire the magnificent courage of the Dutch. Tne com pan v proposes to operate i;s trains at the rate of 110 miles an hour. JEnrnent Scientists contended that railroad cars going it the rate of fit teen to twenty miles an hoar woald kill all the passengers. Yfcey got np a very plausible theory to show that this wo*li be tbe result. What would they say of this 110 miles an hoar electric car? Some of the newspapers are appre tensive that the scientists failed to make any important discoveries duriDg the eclipse. It should not be forgot- j ~ ten that real scientists do not announce conclusions hastily. All the data has not been collected, and then time will be taken lor the consideration of data. If the Boers cannot live under "Rowlftori. thev will find & warm wel come in South Carolina. WHITH OAK ITEMS. This *eciio? was vititcd by a nice slower yesterday. Hope we will get a good le&son soon, ns the crops are nccdiDg it badly. CottoD is looking fairly well and is iu pretty good fix. The corn is very small and bad ntandi. Gardens are going to he very good. A few nice rains and there will bean abundance of veg- tables around Lere, Irish potatoes excepted. It seems that the day has past for raising this delicious crop in this country, owing to the potato beetle that has been so distructive in the past few year?. Melons are very promising at this time. Fruit will be plentiful. Blackberries and plums are beginning to ripen and the "coons" are happy. The small grain crop is being harvested now. Both wheat and o&ts are very good. Mr. T. G. Patrick has the finest oats in this country. He sowed them in August when he laid b his cotton, sowing the grain in the rows, thwn rnn his enltivator alone the rows covering the seed lightly. About March he broke the cotton stalks and . . pulled ap the stubble to make way for the cradle. It is said by several that he .made from 40 to 50 bushels per acre on one field of ?0 acres. Mr. S. R. Patrick has overhauled his threshing outfit aud started it out Tfr will nnrtar tho man. ageaent of R. L. Patrick and T. L. Gladden. These young men are kustlers and know how to manage a threshing machine. Tom Hill, the wizard, ha? changed his base of operation. He has been seen recently in the swamps of Damper's Creek, west of the railroad. The Southern Railway Company hare painted their buildings at this j plaee. The young Messri. Patrick have ibippei their pet donkeyF. The climate here did not agree with them. Mr. W. E. Hendrix has been very unwell for some time. We hope he will soon be all right again. Mrs. J. B.
