?Sunduy was quite a wintry day,
aud many people appeared in winter

not feel at all uncomfortable, and fires
were a necessity. Such cold weather
to late in the spring is very unusual.
Frost was predicted by the weather
bureau for Monday morning, but by
Monday the weather, fortunately, had
moderated and no serious harm resulted
from the cold. i

?The ladies of the Memorial Associuion
met on Thursday afternoon
and although very few ladies were
present, arrangements for the celebration
on the 30th inst. were made. The
ladies decided not to have any exercises,
as has been customary, but the
graves of the soldiers will be decorated
as usual- Therefore, on ihe

County, and a consistent memoer of

leaves five sons and one daughter and
a host of friends to mourn her ioss.

Episcopal church convened at St
Stephen's. Ridge vav, Monday night
last. The Rc.Cantey Johnson of
Rock IliJl preached. On Tuesday

The convocation \va? then
organized for business. An arrangement
was made to provide services
for the church at Camden during the
continued s'ckne=s of Rev. J. M.
Stoney.
Yorkvillc was the point selected fjr
the next meeting of the convocation,
and Nov. 2, the tine.
On Tuesday night the Jujv. Mr.
Anderson of lorkvillc preached. Ou
Wednesda} morning the Rev. A. B.
Mitchell preached, after which the
convocation met ajjain. Certain clergymen
were appointed to hold missions
in various pans of the diocese
The subject of the woman's auxiliary
was discussed. At night the Rev.
W. U. Gordon of Edgefield made an
address on the history ot the church.
On Thursday morning, after service,
all the clergymen present made a report
of the work done in their respective
fields of labor In the afternoon
a children's service was held, at
which Bishop CapersardRev. Messrs.
Mitchell and Gordon made addresses.
At night the bishop preached and the
Rev. Mr. Mitchell addressed the congregation
on the subject of the Brotherhood
of St. Andrew, which resulted
in the organization of a chapter of
that organization for Kidgeway and
vicinity.
On Friday morning, after the services
of the church, the convocation
passed resolutions of thanks for the
hospitality of the Ridgeway people
and adjourned.
The Rev. A. R. Alit-hell lemained
over and preached Friday night.
The convocation was in all respects
gra'ifying, The attendance was on
each occasion large. Much interest

c'crgymen received every courtesy
that, a refined sentiment prompted.

News is very scarce in our town at
present, but I will endeavor to send
you a tew dois anyway.
Farmers have about caught up with
their crops, but rain is very much
needed at present. There seems to
be a good crop of fruit in this section
and it won't be long now until we
have plums to eat.
Uur young people seem to oe enjoying
this delightful spring weather
very much?going on fishing expeditions,
taking twilight strolls, etc.
Verily the poet was right when be
said :
"In the spring a young man's fancy
Lightly turns to thoughts of love."
The Girls' Sewing Society gave a
splendid entertainment Wednesday
evening for the benefit of the Baptist
Church. Erery one in it reflected
a real; credit on themselves, and the
large audience which was present
seemed to enjoy the evening hugely.
The delightful music also added very
much to the grand success of the affair.
The night operator, Mr. China, of
Sumter, arrived a week or so ago.
He is a fine young man and wc are
very giau to nave mm in our cuy.
Mr. Watson was with us again last
Suudav. He held one of the most
interesting meetings aiid administered
the most beautiful baptism that has
been had at Sr d Level in many
months

a vifit to Ins sister, Mrs. Poovy.
Misses Lottie aud Maud Macou have
return ad home after spending a few
days at Blythewood.
We are glad to say that Mr. Jell'

more feeble. For a week or more the
watchers at his bedside have felt the
end near, and on Friday afternoon, in
the presence of his large family, the

of a long and n-eful life so long identified
with Fairfield County in her
prosperity and in her sorrows ai;d
troubles.
Mr. Elliott was a kind, gentle and

deed"-, but lie was charitab': speech,
and yet firm i:i his convictions witb
the enrage to utter them when wisdom

Tho subjcct of this sketch was a son
of Mr. James Elliott, and a brother ol
the late Mr. J. M. Elliott. He was
born in Winnsboro and was in the 81st
I year of his age at the time of his
death. In his early mauhood, he went
to Charleston, and clerked in the mer/*?onfi!a
establishment of a Mr. Gllli
land. After staying there awhile he

bushioss c.f a tnei chant being associated
with Maj. Samuel Baikky,
under the firra-nama of Barkley &
Elliott. He afterwards formed a copartnership
with David G-. Ruff. Subsequently
he became cashier of the
Planners Bank of Fairfield, and for
a while was president of that institution.
After leaving the bank, he devoted
his attention to planting, though
he was interested with others in mer
chandising in the county.
Mr. Elliott was twice married. His
first wife was Miss Mary McMasler, a
sister of Mr. G. II. McMaster. Pis
children by this marriage were John
Elliott, who was killed in the war between
the States, Mrs. John P. Matthews,
Mrs. Neil Pressley, Mrs. A. F.
Ruff, and the late Mrs. J. H. Cum
mings. His second wife was Miss
Tirzah Ketchin, daughter or Rev.
Thomas Ivetchin. The following

Saturday afternoon at the A. R. P.
church, and the large number of people
that at'endcd, inspite of the rain,
testified to the great esteem in which *
Mr. Elliott was held by the people of
Winnsboro. The following gentlemen
