party, among them no Jos? a person
than Senator Chaddler, L&ve lately
been charging that the big manufacturers
of the country have been raising
a large corruption fund to secure
McKinley^ nomination, the favored
manufacturing interests recognizing
tha' McKioley is the great apostle of
high protection, and they know that j
his election as President will gaar^ntee j
a high protective tariff. If these
people contribute money to have,
McKinley nominated, is it not almost
a ceitaiuly that they will even more
generously give money to secure his
election? This state .of affairs is exactly
what Mr. Bayard laid at the door
of McEinley's high tarifl" policy, and
his indictment is being proven br the
testimony of leading Republicans
themselves. The Ambassador shuttld
take no notice of the action of Congress.
It is a resolution passed practically
by a party vote. Why Mr.
Latimer, of this State, who calls himself
a Democrat and presumably is
opposed to protection, supported the
resolution we can not see. Mr.
Bayard's speech ought to be distributed.
It would do his party good.

We notice that in North Carolina
the people are complaining of the
abuse being made in the fee system
in the administration of justice in the
United states (jourts. itns system
ha; long been the source of obtaining
money from the government unjustly
by United States Marshalls and their
deputies and the professional witnesses
who always appear at the sessions of
the courts. The evil practice in this
line is not confined to North Carolina,
but we hare no doubt but that it is
practiced in all of the State?. It will
