?It is a very surprising faet that

floating gaily to the breeze. Then,
too, Governor Tillman could station
a man there armed with one of his

WIXXiSBOUOASA SUMMER RKSOItT. 1
I Winnsboro is a hc;iillty town. That
I statement we think will not be denied
by any of our citizens, a!though there
are some who will be inclined to j
doubt it ewitig to the fact that there j
j are at present several cases of fever ;
i within the corporate limits. It is true j
; that there is some fever here, but j
j these cases can almost without exception
be traced ta local causes, and our I
people should not lose conlidence in !
Winnsbor? as a summer resort. The j
reputation of our town us a safe placc j
to spend the heated term would not j
I sull'er in ihe least by a comparison of !
its health record with that of any i
!other town in South Carolina. If you i
! can't afford to go away for the sum-!
| mcr month- just console yourself by)
j beari: g in ..iiud the fact that we have j
j just as go d a climate liere as your
! neighbor v. ho has taken flight as a '
! summer swallow is enjoying some J
l where else at fifteen or twenty dollars
: a week.
THIS WAS A TREAT.
J11 making our announcement of 1
Miss Billow's appearance in Winns
boro we felt perfectly confident that!
what we said concerning her talent j
- 1 .... __ ... ?..ie j
mill <fui)lll5' US'" Ull L'lUtlUlUIUJl II I
thoroughly deserved aiui that she j
would acquit herself in such a manner j
as to merit the praise which we tin- j
hesitatingly and without reserve ar- j
corded her. The poop'c of Winnsboro
had been prepared for a rare
elocutional treat and we think when
; we say that their expectations were
more than realized we but voice the
[sentiments and opinions ot those \\ ho ;
were so fortunate as to be present at i
the recital Thur>day evening. Miss]
I>ulow his devoted several years ;<>1
the study of elocution in its various j
branches, and the extraordinary pro- j
ficiencv which she has attained is i
simply the natural result of a develop-1
ment by careful training of her in-1
natc talent for the art. She cerla'nly J
has a wondeiful command of voice!
and expression, and in reciting the j
pieces selected for j lmrsday evenings i
entertainment this was displayed to
great advantage.
The audience, which was rather i
' i
smaller thai: it should have been, was
charmed, and throughout the evening'
manifested the interest felt by the
closest attention.
Among the recitations were, "The
Legend of Bregenz,". "The Birds'
Banquet,'' "Our Guides in Genoa and
Rome," an extract from Jean Ingclow
and others just as good.
The success of the entertainment
was contributed to by Miss Hanna
Rion who played an exquisite instru-;
mental solo, and Mr. Longstreet Gantt.
who rendered some of his inimitable
comic songs.
