which could be used in common, saving

patrons and pupils.
That the Sis to at great expense had |

I did not believe then, nor do I now j
believe, that the fanners approve of or i
sympathize with any Such movement. |
They were satisfied; and would prefer i
to send their sons to the University
rather than to :i school in the clay hills
of Anderson, inaccessible in the winter
time, and without a hotel or a liverv I
stable in iniles of it. There was no j
use ior it. That all attempts to carry!
out the scheme of a purely agricultural
college had failed and from the nature
of the case must fail. That "the Clemson
College was an unmitigated and
an infernal humbug." But as a few
of our people we;e demented on tlie
subject, for she sake of the peace of

the matter I??ir<"> "before the people, and j
it it fully di>etissed they ?\oiildj
conclude that they already enjoyed'
much better advantages in the University
than a farmers' college ever
can give. And then the people in four
year*' time would sink the Clemson
College ont of sighr.
After I made my speech, u friend
told me I n?t?l the word "infernal.*'
I admitted it was unparlimentarv and
u=ed in the heart of debate. Since 1
have seen the prommciamento I think
j the word was prophetic and cetlainly
the proper word if this address voices
the sentiments of Clemson College
advocates. b\ \V. McMasteu.
