favorably impressed with his recent
trip to Nashville. It will be remembered
that lie and Mr. Guinyaijilijji^
delegates from South CaroU^ attended
the convention, the object ef which
"was to consider the adoption of reform
? prisons. Thev have them in Tennessee,
and Mr. Anderson says he was deeply
impressed with them, and thinks that
it would be a wise course for this State
to follow Tennessee. Delegates from
every state ixt tin? union were present,
and tliey seemed unanimously to favor
reform prisons. Mr. Anderson says
the attention of the Legislature during
its present session will be directed to
this matter, and it is hoped some action
will be taken, for in many instances
the penitentiary, as it is now. in ease of
very small boys, proves to be a school
of vice and not a school of reform.

Columbia, Nov. 30.?The usual
routine and. the cnll of unfinished
business took up most of yesterday,
and the hum-drum of the House vras
not disturbed until the bill to reduce
tfae salaries of the State officers was
brought up, when a most lively breeze
sprung up. The House vras unwilling
to vole at once upon so .important
a measure, and the discussion was
brought to a close upon a motion to
postpone to some miure u?v na w.jideraiion.
The marriage liccnse bill started a
most frantic cyclone of discussion.
Mr. Ficken, of Charleston, espoused
his cause most zealously, and the announcement
that the clergy, willi few
exceptions, ia Charleston were in favor
of the bill seemed to impress the House.
Messrs. Buist, B raw ley, McCrady and
others spoke in favor of the present
state of affairs, but all to no purpose.
The House passed to the second reading
the bill requiring all those who
contemplate marriage to get a license j
from the Clerk to legalize (he ceremony,
and one more obstacle in the
way of marriage has been raised. It
is hoped the Senate will kill the bill.
Ottr mambers voted solidlv against it.
The flouse indulged in the luxury
of a night session last evening.
This morning is being taken up with
a diacustion of the Charleston liquor i
bill. " It Is the old story, a bevy of 1
