OUR PHILADELPHIA LETTER.
There is much to leani and much
that is interesting in a visit to the
Zoological Gardens or as it is more
familiarly called the "Zoo." The
houses or compartments for the different
animals are, instead of being in
oue large building, separate and scattered
over the grounds, and there is
* the serpent house and lion house and
monkey house and so on through the
long category of animals.
It is quite au interesting study to
notice the many peculiar habits and
instincts of the different animals.
TKfl <4ton?lonii plmncps its
hue when excited by fear or anger,
and indeed is said to reflect any color
near it, and is susceptible to the subtle
charms of music. The altogether ungraceful
movements of the mangaree
and th* supple graceful step of the
/ zebra are interesting by their contrast,
and so one might spend a long time
studying zoology - in its different
phases. Hie managers have kindly
placed on the cage or enclosure of
each kind of animal, its name, habit
and so on,--but oue is terribly bewildered
by the vague ideas he ?ets from
the long Latin suffixes ana prefixes
that tell of a boa constrictor, or an
iunocent monkey, so unless he knows
the animal by name it isn't likely that
he will learn it from its title on the

the garden, and they are alwavs the
of an interested group <jf spec"tfrtters,
partly I suppose from the fact
that they once roamed our Western
plains by-the thousand, and now with
. scarcely'the lapse of twenty years they
have almost been exterminated by the
murderous slaughter of the hunter.
It is saM that the Northern Pacific
- Railroad has the credit or rather dis
credit ofthie rnthless destruction of
these animals. The buflalo would use
the telegraph poles as scratching posts,
and would by constairi rubbing wear
them ont. and when UKTcoiftTiany had
B in them, nothing
daunted the befifalo xitalized them as
B currv-combs and this sealed liis doom,
the company hired hunters to.cxtermi
liate them, which they did very effectually,
and now I believe there is bat one
or* two other herds extant. From
animals to " art is quite a leap,
but as I have visited the Academv of
I Tune Arts I will try and give your
*, readers game acconnt of it. It is
owned and controlled by a joint stock
company or association, and contains
many valuable works of art both in
sculpture and painting. There are
- marble busts of statesmen and warrious.
stupies from Grecian mythology
and Daintin?5 of all sizes and kinds.
k /from a largse ten by twelve foot painting
representing "Death on the White
Horse" to the true colored violet on
the vase. There is one strikingly realistic
painting of the "Christian martyrs
in the coleseum at Rome/' and
the horrrrs of religious persecution

The Political Horizon is beginning
to brighten up, and the Camden people
just across the river are having Campaigne
speeches, and numberless caueasses
