A negro man reported on "Wednesday that a "cullud doctor" had been practicing in his family and after administering a dose or two of some quack medicine of his own and collecting $0.00 had left for unknown parts. This victim lived in the neighborhood of the first dupe. Before he is arrested the "doctor" will probably rake in a ib*.v ir.ore dollars from his foolish patients. ?Cn Thursday morning' last Jim "Woodward, while driving Mr. 1 W. II. Flenniken's team just below town, met with quite a painful accident, owing to the mules becoming frelghtened and running away. In the run Jim was thrown out of the wagon, the wheels passing over his breast and right shoulder and painfully lacerating them. The pole of the wagon struck the calf of his leg, tearing away the ficsb. The wagon was totally demolished. His many friends in the county will wish him and his beautiful bride many years of happiness and prosperity,' A Brutal Assault.?We have received information from White Oak of a brutal assault made bv a negro whereby the arm of Mrs. Tillman D. Gibson was broken. In a conversation between Mr. Gibson and the negro the latter suddenly struck Mr. Gibson, when his wife and daughter rushed to his rescue. Campaign Fund.?A canvass of the town was made on Monday for sub scnptions to tne national juemocrauc Committee. Chairman Gaillard reports that about 8-12.00 was collected which was a large amount, consideringthe short lime for work. The money was immediately sent to t'ne Committee in New York. Those of the town and county who did not have an opportunity of contributing will see in our editorial columns a call fur them to clo so. In town canvassers will call further upon those who have not been seen, and we hope all who read this paper in the county will lend a helpline hand. Death.?Little James, son of Mr. and Mrs. II. N, Obear, died ou Friday morning at 2 o'clock of membranous croup. lie had not been well for several days and on Thursday morning at 5. A. M., grew worse. All day Thursday the doctors were with him and performed tracheotomy, which aflbrdcit great relief, and lie slept quietly and seemed much better, but on Friday morning be grew worse rapidly and as stated uied at 2 o'clock. The remains were in-erred in the Episcopal ce met cry at -i u'clock Friday afternoon. In their bereavement the parents have the sympathy of the community. ?It is useless to attempt the cure of any disorder, if t!ie blood is allowed to remain impure. W. & C. railroad. G. II. McMaster, Esq., was in the chair. On motion of Solicitor McDonald a committee was appointed, with the president as cxofficio chairman to secure canvassers in townships Xo. 1-i and ? for names to petitions asking the county commissioners to order an election on township bonds. The chairman appointed J. (J. Caldwell, James Q. Davis, and Charles A. Douglass such committee. On motion of the Solicitor the amount of subscription to be asked for in Xo. 1-i was fixed at $41,000, and that of Xo. 4 at ?9,000. The meeting then adjourned. The Fire, the Loss and Other Facts About the Conflagration. On Wednesday night about 10.30 o'clock the lire alarm was sounded and it was quickly seen that the Duval IIor.se was burning. The fire originated in the kitchen in some unknown way, but it made considerable progress before it was discovered. The engines and truck were quickly on the gronnd, but for some cause it was at least fifteen minutes before the steamer began to throw water. By this time it was seen that it was impossible to save the building, so all attention was given to saving property in the immediate vicinity, which was in danger. Everybody went to work carrying out furniture and other articles in the house, and they succeeded in saving a large part, although of necessity considerably damaged. It looked at one time as if Crawford's stable was doomed, and had it caught the destruction of propertywould have heen appalling. The water was, however, turned upon this building, which was luckily saved. Iu a little more than an hour the hotel had burned to the ground. The hotel was valued at about $3,500 and the furniture belonging to it about $500. On the building there was in-. sarance to the amount of $S00 and on the furniture $200. The insurance covers the loss on the furniture. Some of the boarders in (he hotel succeeded in saving ail their cffects; but Mr, "Walker Brown was not so fortunate, he losing all his furniture, his clothing and that of his wife. His loss will amount to between $400 and $500. Cri-crA. praise is due to the firemen """ ? ? 1' - for their splendid work and to Mr. R. J. McCarley for his able directions. There are some people though who believe that a portion of the building could have been saved, but opinions differ as to that, but all agree that there was some mismanagement with the steamer. An unavoidable delay occurred in sounding the alarm, by the breaking of the rope twice, which caused some people to think there was not much of a fire after all. Among those who deserve snecial mention for their zeal in the work of saving property, we mention the names of Turner Bros, and Mr. Carmichael, all cotton buyers, who are stationed here temporarily. It was generally remarked that they worked as if some of their own property was endangered, for which work they will certainly have the thanks of the citizens of Winnsboro. Mrs. Duval is not despondent, but displays much courage in her loss. She provided her many boarders with their usual breakfast the next morning at Mr. F. "W. Uabenicht's residence. She has made arrangements to again commence business, and will be in a position in a short time to accommodate her large number of friends and the x ublic generally. Mrs. Duval will have universal sympathy in the loss of her property, which represents the accumulation of years of industry ana toil. Some young ladies ia looking over the ruins on Thursday picked up a bible with.the name, "C. T. Farmers had better put in oats to supply the I rlAficirmcv. The Fairfield Baptist Association met with Beulah church, in Richland county, of which Rev. T. TV. Mellichamp is pastor.
