Died Suddenly.?A telegram on
Friday night last announced the sad
fact that Mr. Jno. 0. Flennikcn died
suddenly at his home in Chester county.
Mr. Flennikcn was the oldest son
of the Rev. Warren Ficnniken, and a
brother of Messrs. D. R. and VV. II.
Flennikcn. lie was a native of Chester
county, and lived there during his
whole life. For a while he attended
the Mount Zion School of this placc.
He was a member of the oid Sixth
T?Aoimfni- tvhnsft members, besides all
of his numerous friends, entertained
the kindest feeling and warmest r.iTection
for him. His plain, blunt ways
and his characteristic candor won for
him friends wherever he was. His
death was very unexpected; he was
out hunting on Wednesday, and died
at G o'clock Friday evening. Mr.
Flenniken was forty-five old. His
bereaved family have the heartfelt
sympathy of the entire community.

Tiiat Cottox Factory.?The following
is Irom the Abbeville Press
and Banner:
Within the last few days there has
been considerable talk of building a
factory at Abbeville, and already
various public spirited citizens have
expressed their willingness to take
stock in such an enterprise, but up to
the present time the aggregate amount
of proposed subscriptions is merely
nominal. This movement is .nade in
the belief that the existence of-alactory
at Abbeville would make this
market for cotton equal to Greenville
and Columbia, and that if more people
were here it would be of incalculable
benefit to the farmers, as it would
create a demand for country produce,
(and then 10 bushels of sweet potatoes
would not glut the market,) that the
interests of the town would be promoted
in numerous ways; for instace,
one gentleman says that whereas, now
only 10,00 or 12,000 bales of cotton is
sold in this market, with the factory
20,000 bales or more would come here
which naturally would increase the
trade of the town.
The same reason why Abbeville
should establish a factory applies with
equal force to Winnsboro
Scene ix The Xews axd IIeuald
Office.?We cannot a fiord to use |
names, but the following we give to
our readers just as it happened. A
gentleman, considerably the worse icr
having tvken just ''one" too many,
knocks at the back door of our office.
In response to tho invitation to walk
up, he gets up stairs, and the following
conversation between our foreman
and the gentleman takes place, of
course unaware of the fact that the
lqcal editor was in hearing distance:
"Mister, how is it you have never
called on me for my subscription? I
haven't paid in two or three years.
"Oli!" said the man of types, "we :
never ask a gentleman for money."
"You don't? Why how do you
manage to get along when your subscribers
fail to pay?"
"Why after it runs a certain time,
we conclude that a man who fails to

"Oh! ah! yes! I see. Pieasc give
me a receipt for what I owe, (hands
over four dollars,) and please see that
my name is all right on your books."
The local editor chuckled in his
sleeves, and thought that Jack would
make a fine collecting agent.
Our Granite Deposits.?We clip
the following from the Columbia Register:
As an addition to the industrial
equipments of the State we notice
with satisfaction the organization of
the Winnsboro Granite Company with
a capital of $G0,000. The original
owners were Colonel Rion, Colonel
A. C. Haskell and Major* Tom "\V.
Woodward. The present company,
reinforced by Charleston men, have
purchased from the present owners,
have organized, and will go vigorously
to work. As this "Winnboro" granite
is of fine quality, and the company
have both money and enterprise we
see no reason why it shall not turn

since the quarries are said to be
wellnigh inexhaustible.
For some time past Major Woodward,
the most active owner of the
Winnsboro Granite Quarries, has been
negotiating with Charleston capitalists
for a sale of an interest in the quarries.
He has succeeded, and on Saturday
ia3t a meeting of the members of the
new company was held, for the purpose
of electing officers, and for the
transaction of other business relative
to the development of their quarries.
Heretofore, for the want of available
capital, the work has not been done on j

It is cow the purpose of the new com- j
pany to increase the facilities for quarrying.
and to use improved machinery.
The deposits are almost inexhaustible,
and from present prospects there is
millions in it for the new company.

The Earmers' Association of Fairfield
county is called to meet in the
Court House at Winnsboro, on Saturday,
November 19th, at 11 o'clock.
The sub-organizations throughout the
county are earnestly requested to send
delegates to this meeting, as business
of importance is to be transacted.

j Xoblc of soul, and high of aim,
! Thou warden of the people's weal, .

i With roll of drum and bugle-peal,
! And thousand voices heavenward soar
To join the glad acclaim.

Glows the true patriot's grateful love,
To him who saved the nation's life.
And for tffe eagle gave the dove

Of welcome and of loyalty;

The festival given by (he ladies of
the Baptist church here on Thursday
evening was a brilliant success, both
socially and financially. One of the
many pleasing incidents of the occasion
was the voting of a cake to the
most popular young ladv. Great interest
was taken in this by everybody,
and the excitement was almost equal
to a political contest. j\Iiss Delplnne
Desporles look the cake, and was
therefore the belle of the evening.
The treasurer was here on Tuesday,
and judging from the unusually large
crowd here on that day it is thought
he made fine collections. Evidently
there was considerable money around,
for the merchants were almost as busy
as they are on Saturday.
It rained quite as much here lately
as elsewhere, but notwithstanding the
water and mud business kept booming.
Cotton continues to come, and everybody
is paying up in full with something
left. In the amount of goods
sold and produce bought, there are
?V>n- if* omr +r?nrr?c in fho Sfn.fr> rif flip
same size that can equal llidgeway. .
The business men all regard the inter
est of the town as their individual ;
good, and consequently they see to it that
every man who-trades here goes
away thoroughly satisfied that h(Thas i
gotten as much for his cotton as lie :
could get anywhere elss, and (hat he
has bought goods as cheaply as they
can behold in a legitimate business- 1
like market. ,
The school here is flourishing, and ;
everything there seems to be getting i
on satisfactorily to everybody in the .
community. All the people take an 1
interest in it, and it is one of the lead
ing "ear marks" of a solid community
that they are interested in the school
and church.
We respect The News and Her- <
ald's opinion on the subject of State <
Sovereignty, etc., as advanced in con- '
nexion with the imprisonment of the ;
Virginia oflicials, but notwithstanding \
its able reasoning we are -obliged to j
differ. The war did not decide that ?
there was no such thing as State Sovereignty,
but simply that the Union !
was indestructible, leaving everything \
else in statu quo. The status of the
States is that they ore in all respects. (
Sovereign, save that they have entered j
in/o a compact from which thev c.n- 1
nor withdraw. 13ut aside from all ;
this it does not appear upon what
pretext a Federal Judge could pre- j
sume to interfere in the domestic af- 1
fairs of a State. The Common Law of
England is 110 part of the law of the
United States in its aggregate capac
ity, and all the powers of a Federal
Judge is defined by Statute made in
pursuance of the Constitution. If it
is held that the Virginia law impaired .
the obligation of contracts and thereby
give the Federal Courts jurisdiction,
the answer is that a State cannot be
sued even on a contract, and therefore
a law which impaired the obligation
of a State contract couldn't preja- j
dice anybody's rights. The only redress
for the bondholders is through
the Legislature, for be it said to the
shame of this country that there is no ;
tribunal here which exercises the func- ,
tions of the ordinary Court of Chancery,
and the only "redress against a !
State is through the Legislature.
