Fire in Lancaster.?A destructive
fire visited our sister town, Lancaster,
on Saturday last. The fire originated
in the cotton on the piatform of the
Chester & Cheraw Railroad, and destroyed
about 100 bales of cotton, tho
depot and contents, and several other

Serious Accident.?On Tuesday
last Harriet Watson, a colored woman
living on Mr. T. T. Lumpkin's place,
met with a very serious and painful
accident. While feeding cane to a

the rollers and her arm drawn

crushed up as far as it had
gone. Dr. J. A. Scott was called in
and the arm amputated above the elbow.
At last accounts she was getting
along very well.

A Good Move.?Under existing ordinances
of tbe town, it is the duty of
every citizen to keep the pavements in
front of their ovrn residences curbed
aud in good condition. A petition is
now on the desk in the office of the
Winnsboro National Bank for signatures,
asking the Council to make
changes in the ordinances as wiil make
it the duty of the Council to have the
above mentioned work done at the
expense of the town. This seems to
us the most equitable way, and it will
insure us, we are confidant, better
pavements than we have at present.
War Against High Prices.?In
waging their war against high prices,
Messrs. Q. D. Williford & Co. have
found it necessary to double their
advertising space, in order to quote to
tbe public some of the qrand bargains
offered over their counters. Their
fall aud winter stock, including goods
in every department found in a firstclass
dry goods store, has been purchased
with the utmost care, and is
bound to please those desiring firstcluss
goods at living prices. Read
their Quotations found in another col
umn, and then go and see for yourself.
StillBehind.? Messrs Sam'l. white,
Johu M. Spratt and B. D. Springs, of
Fort Mill, have filed their declaration
for incorporation as the Fort Mill
Manufacturing Company. The business
of the Company will be to manufacture
cotton and woolen goods. The
capital stock is placed at $50,000, divided
into 500 shares at $100 each.
Here is a town of less than one-sixth
the size of our own, going right ahead
in the establishment of a cotton factory,
while oar town and county still
remains idle. If the establishment of
a factory will pay in other towns, why
will it not pay here?

a cotton man would like to know. It
is a convenient reference book for all
cotton merchants. Price $2.00.
A Painful Accident.?Mr. Duncan
C. Robertson, the well known commercial
representative of Messrs. Pelzer,
Rogers & Co., of Charleston, met
with a painful mishap at the Winnsboro
Hotel on Tuesday night. While
descending the rear steps of the Hotel,
in company with one of the waiters
who was carrying a light, the wind
extinguished the light, and while the
water had gone back lor another, Mr.
Robertson, thinking he was at the
foot of the steps, started to walk, when
he fell down several steps, breaking
his leg below the knee. Dr. Hanahan
was called in, and the broken bone set
in shape. Mr. Robertson will be laid
up for some time, but his host of
friends in town will see that he has
proper nursing and attention.
Delegates to the Old Men's
Meeting.?President Duncan, of the
State Agricultural Society, has appointed
as delegates to the Old Men's
Meeting at the State Agricultural
Society this fall, the following gentlemen
of the county: Jas. A. McCrorey,
ofGladden's Grove, age 86; Stephen
Gibson, of Horeb, age 87; Capt. T. M.
Lyles, of Lyles's Ford, age 76.
Alternates?Samuel Stevenson, of
Feasterville, age, So; John "Weldon,
of "Winnsboro, age 73; J. B. Cloud,
of Blythewoon, age 77. Each one
of these gentlemen are well known
and progressive farmers of this county,
and it is the earnest desire of all the
* 3
younger larmers ana citizens generally
that they should attend and represent
our county. Each have been farming
for more than forty years, and we
think it peculiarly fittiDg that they
should receive the appointment.
Transportation will he furnished ihem
there and return should they determine
to go.

IS IT JUST?
Messrs. Editors: Ordinarily the pub
lie has nothing to do with tne transactions
between private- individuals, but
occasionally a case occurs that I think
should qe known as information to the
unsuspecting, and the following is one
of those cases wbich I make public
not through spite, but as a warning.
My knowledge of parts of the transaction
is obtained from others, and
may not be strictly correct: A dealer
in horses and mules sells a mule worth
about $120 00, cash, to a farmer on
time, taking his note payable at a certain
time. The note not being paid at
maturity the mule was seized and sold
at auction to highest bidder at a price
very f&r short of the time price, although
irom information the *iuie was
in nearly, if not qui te, as good fix as
when purchased. The farmer paid a
" : - ' V' '
bale of cotton 011 the mule, say $:> 00,
more or less. Now, to secure the
difference between the cash price
of the mule at public sale and the time
price, another mule worth about $125
cash, was sold to the farmer, tor which
the farmer gives a note embracing the
price of the second mule and the dcficit
on the other mule, which said note
was for $23-1 o0, with interest at 10
per cent., which amounted at maturity
to $250 -15. To sum up:
x"* - i - -? ? ? x x *.nrA at
-l\olc a.nu interest - - - -?.j
1 bale cotton, say, - - - 3G 00
$1G 00 due to lawyer - 1G 00
$302 45
Or $'302 45 for a $125 mule. Xow
t^e whole transaction was undercover
of .the law, but it docs seem to me that
the ends of justice might have been
met somewhat short of that. As a
gentleman remarked to me a few days
ago, I would say this is the best country
in the world, for the farmers have
been paying from 10 to 100 per cent,
and all are not broke yet.
