Some Account of a Few Lending Business Houses of Winusboro, For some time pasiwe have thought 01 informing' the readers of The Xews and Herald some of the business of Winnsboro. and where to buy goods when they are in town. It will necessarily be impossible to plve anything like a complete statement of the busiAf } in Alio Kfino mwl fit best our report must be incomplete. The trade in dry goods lias steadily ; increased tor the past ten years, with i perhaps a slight falling off for the past two years, owing to the suocsssivc bad ; crop?, but this depression in the opin| ion of our business men is only temi porary. Perhaps the oldest dry goods establishment i:i town is the wellknown firm of McMastek, Brice & IvETcniN. In ISoo Messrs. li. S. Ketchiu and ; G. II. jMcliasier succeeded the tirai of IT. T, TCI Holt Sr. C!n.. nml lipcr-m hus? i liess under tlis firm name of Ketchin : & McMaster, in (he oid Odd Fellows' ! Ilall which stood on the corner opj posite tlie store of It. W. Phiiiips. j : This was a large two-story brick : building. They continued lo do busii ness at this stand uniii it was burned by Sherman w hen lie passed through during ihe war. After this they cuinir.-.iiced business in the old postoffice in the McMaster Hotel. In ISCo Mr. James A. Brice was admitted as a i member of the firm, under the firm name r\f ATi?\I iclnr Xr Tlrirrf* Sni?n 1 ; after this they moved 10 their present ! stand 011 the corner. They continued ! to do a good business and established ; themselves as first-class merchants. In 1871 the firm was again changed by j the death of the senior member, Mr. K. S. Ketchin, and the firm name changed to McMaster & Brice. They did aline busine>sduring the few years succeeding the formation of the partnership when cotton was selling at twenty-live and thirty cents per pound. Mr. T. II. Ivetciiin, a son of Mr. li. S. Ketchin, after the death of his father, . j entered me score us a cicik aim con- j j (inued with tiie finn until 1871) when , j be was admitted as a partner. The ( stylo of the tirm name was changed to j McMaster, Brice & Ive*chin. Since , j that time they have enlarged their | : store on several occasions to meet the < j demands of an increasing trade. They ( ! deal in everything found in a first- ] class dry goods .-tore, including cloth- j ' ing, boots and shoes, and a general ! < Hue of gents' furnishing goods. Be- j? sides tiiis they keep on hand a well j ' selected stock of drags anil lancy art 1- ; c'es. Mr. T. II. Ketchin ha> recently | j returned from New York, where he ; purchased a fall stock of fall and win- ; ter goods. They do a general cash , I and credit business. A member of the . ! firm informed as that trade was begin- < | ning to revive and that they expected j | to do a good business during the win- , i ter months. Thev are firm believers l i >u the future of our town, and in the ] ; corrse of the next five or ten years | ! ez )cct to sec it one of the leading j ! towns of the Slate. J. M. Beaty & Bko. In 1878 the firm of J. M. Beaty & ( ! Co. was organized, Messrs. J. M. . Beaty and James Beaty being the ^ members o" the firm. The business,' , however, was under the personal supervision of Mr. J. M. Beafy. This firm continued to do business at the corner I ? ?a - A! . 1 COO wim merxicu suuuess umn jloou, nucu the firm was changed by the death of Mr. James Beaty. Mr. J. M. Beaty. a brother, ] was in that year admitted as a partner, < and the business conducted under the 1 present firm name of J. M. Beaty & j Bro. During the past year they have made considerable changes in their building, and have now one of the ? handsomest and best arrauged stores < in town. It is attractive from the oat- J side, and when you enter you are afc ] once impressed with the fact that they j understand their business. They do a j general dry goods business, including 1 ?eu;s' furnishing goods, together with ] a fine line of shoes. They also keep j on hand a well selected line of groceries. They are also ] sanguine over the future prospects of 1 our town and county. We are now j down in the valley and our people . must realize their position and begin to economize and climb the hill. While not as old as some other bnsi- ? ness bouses, they have already estab- ' lished an enviable reputation in their ( business. J. L. Mimnacgu & Co. 1 The only other dry goods store north ] of Washington street is that of J. L. 1 \fimininorh Sr. fin n.rf? flniiicr hnsi- 1 ness ii? the old Elder building. Mr. 1 Mimnaugb came to Winnsboro in 1878 * and commenced business in the storeroom now occupied by Messrs. Q. D. Williford & Co. He continued business at this stand until 1883. His wonderful success during these five veers gave him an eye to some larger place. In the fall of the last year i named he removed to Columbia, where : 1 his success has been even greater than , in our town. In the fall of 18S5 a < lirst-class stock of drv goods was of < fered for sale by a merchant at Ridgeway. Mr. Mimnaugh, with his ever watchlul eye for business, bought the stock and removed it to Wiur>sboro. Since that time he has been udding to ' tms siock, ana now nas a wen seiec:ca store of general dry goods aud notions. He does a strictly cash business and has met with flattering success. His j store at this place is under the imme- , diate supervision of his clerks, but he 1 makes frequent trips in order to stip- ' ph any department and to see that the business is conducted according to his j ideas. His fall and winter stock is ; now complete in everv deDartment. [ * I and we arc informed that his trade is beginning to come in lively. As you walk up Congress street alter crossing wasningion sircui, mu first object which attracts your attention in the dry goods line is the fine display in front of the store-room of D. A. IIexdrix, in the bank building. Mr. Hendrix is no stranger to the the people of Fairfield, having been engaged in the grocery business for a number of years before entering into dry goods. He opened at his present stand in 18S5, after having his store-room thoroughly overhauled and repainted. In his establishment you will find everything usually kept in a first-class dry goods establishment, besides a fine lii?e of groceries and confectionaries. He believes in quick sales and small profits, and to do this he doc* mostly a cash business. He thinks the trade outlook better than usual lor the coming winter months, and expects to do a rushing business in his line. Just two doors south of this is another attractive exhibition in the same building in the way ot ury gooas, ana across the street we see the sign of Q. 1). Willi ford & Co. This firm was organized in 18S4, the parties being Messrs. A. Williford, A. "W. Brown and R. II. Simpson. They bought out the stock of J. Groescliel, Ageut, and commenced business at the old stand in the Gerig building, under the firm name of A. Williford & Co. In ISSo Mr. A. Wuliford sold his interest to his son, Mr. Q. D. Williford. and the firm name was changed to the present name. In January, 18S6, Mr. Simpson sold his interest to Mr. A. WPiford. These parties now compose the present firm. Having bought their first stock of dry goods at a great sacrifice, they at once established themselves in the dr> goods business, which reputation they have success4'.<ll?r TMloir hllVOI* hflfi recently returned from the Northern markets and they are now displaying ;t first-class stock of dry goods, including gents' furnishing goods, notions, etc. At a:i early day they expect to open a grocery store in the next room north of their present stand, which is convincing proof that they are firm believers in the future of our town They do mostly a cash business. One | 3f the firm informed us that they were having a good trade and it was increasing every day. They expected this and supplied themselves with the largest ?lock they ever carried. L. Samuels.
