Everything here is dull, business almost
suspended, owing to the scarcity
of money.
The cotton crop this year was sim
ilar to thoso of tho two preceding
years?i. c. about throe-fourths of a
crop. The farmers do not annear to
bo discouraged in the least, but are
going to plant as much as thev can
cultivate, and I fear moro than can bo
cultivated to an advantage. The acro?
ago of small grain is about tho same, I
believe, as is generally sown.
Tho engineers arc surveying a route
for a road from tho Air Lino to tho
factory on Fishing creek. The proposed
road, if built by the route that is
now being surveyed, will cross tho
Charlotte, Columbia & iYtigusta ItaiN
road at Smith's Turn Out, teu miles
north of Chester.
Just before Christmas a good many
colored people passed here en route
for the West. There was a nogro
exodus from this portion of Chester
county Inst fall, but there has been
nothing said about emigration to the
West this winter.
It has been very quiet during tho
whole Christmas. On Christmas day

Misses Janie Burdoll and 15. Gill

purchase lumber with which to ccil
the church which was remodeled some
time since.
On Tuesday night during Christmas,
the young people from far and near,
congregated at the residence of Mr.
Joseph Burdell ' for a party. They
