A special to iho Gulve&ton News
from Austin says: "Two terrible orimes
wero committed in this city lust night,
after midnight, which will undoubtedly.
result in throe deaths, and there la
no telling how many lynching*. During
tho past year Austin has been horlifted
every i'ow weeks hv some das'TOrdly
attack on servant women, both
white and colored. Fully a dozen servants
have been outraged and eight
murdored within this period. The
crimes all boro evidence of being perpetrated
by tho sam6 person. Every
effort has been made to apprehend the

ployed. Many negroes wcro arrested
and put through u rigid examination,
but nothing camo of these ellorts.
Many citizens and sumo officials held
to tho theory that (he crimes wcro perpetrated
by some insane person, who
cunnin<dv devised how he could shed
woman's blood without apprehension.
About midnight \V. II. Hancock, a
well-to-do carpenter residing at 208
Water street, was awakened by groans.
Entering his wife's chamber he found
a vacant bed covered with blood spots.
Me followed tho trail out of the Iront
door around the houso and into tho
backyard, where ho. found his wife
weltering in a pool of blood. She
had hecn struck twico across tho head
and face with n blunt axo and her skull
was fracturod. Althmivh still niiv.t1

from l?cr wounds. Mr?. f Hancock is
40 years of age ami a handsome ?voman.
She bears an unblemished character.
In the midst of the groat excitement
produced by this outrage tho
citizens were appalled at. learning of a
still greater crime that had boon commuted
about the samo hour several
squares distant. At 1 o'clock Mrs.
Phillips, residing at308 Hickory street,
was awakened by the cries of her
grandson. Entering tho room of her
son, James Phillips, sho found tho
infant on tho bed covered with blood,
and Phillips lying senseless from a terrible
blow on the head. Ella Phillipa,
the wife, was missing. The allVighted
neighbors followed a bloody trail and
found her body lying in the hack yard
of tho adjoining premises. Death had
resulted Irom a blow on the forehead
with an axe. Across tho body lay
heavy rails. Her person had been
outraged. There is no elue in either
ease. Tho excitement on tho streets
during the day was very great. Christ|
mas was forgotten. Tho Mayor called

to the call, and a committee ot' public
safely was organized. The feeling
over theso Inst outrages is intense. A

The Boston Jlcrakl says that tho best
class of people iii the North arc Ropubiieans
and the same Cyass of people in
the Sauth arc Democrats, and it believes
that if Senator Butler lived in
Massachusetts he would be a Republican.
On this point it says:
"The same kind of people who are
Democrats in South Carolina arc Republicans
in Massachusetts. If a man
like Senator Hoar lived in South Carolina
ho would bo an honest, high-toned,
bourbon Democrat. IfSenator Bntlor.
of South Carolina, lived in Massachusetts,
he would believe that tho Republican
party is the only hope of the
country."
Tho Wilmington Star disputes tho
assertion of the Boston Herald, and
says that Senator Butler could never
by any possible combination of circumstances
have been a Republican of
the same typo as Senator Hoar. Speaking
of Senator Butler, tho Starsavs:
"lie lives in the South and ho has
