President and Vice-President for an
unexpired term in case of the removal,
death, resignation or inability, both of
the President and Vice-President, and
to declare the officer that shall act as
acting President ad interim. The bill
provides.that the electors appointed byeach
State for the election of President
and Vice-President shall hold their

the college of electors of their respective
States for the Presidential term of
four years, with power to fill vacancies.
In case of the removal of the
President and Vice-President the Secretary
of State shall perform the minsterial

a day, not less than twenty days
hereafter, upon which the college of
electors shall meet for the election of a
President and Vice-President for the

the warring factious of the Democratic
party in Kentucky; but it should, after
-all, be remembered that the interests
.and welfare of the national party are of
infinitely more consequence and con

and bounded by the narrow limits- of
State lines. .Carlisle -was elected as
the representative and embodiment of
a great Jiving principle, and by his
election the Democratic party of the
nation has committed itself to its advocacy
and support. The ultimate
success and usefulness of the Democratic
party will in a large measure
depend upon the Democratic handling
of the tariff questiou during the present
session of Congress. Is the thought
or suggestion to be tolerated for a
moment that the progressive work of
December is to be undone in January,
and the House bereft of its leader and
presiding officer by his election to the
Senate? Kentucky, if she asks it, demands
too much, and Carlisle will not
be wise if he lends aid, comfort or encouragement
to the undertaking.
