Oct 27-tf* —The News and Herald sends Christmas greeting to each and every one of its readers, hoping for all that it may end a year of peace, happiness and prosperity, and that the new year will bo ushered in with omens more auspicious than the last. —Are not our legislators over-doing the thing? They adjourned Saturday night last at twelve o’clock and met Monday morning just fifty-five minutes to one o’clock. They seem to he at least honest in their observance of Sunday, but certainly they stand upon their rights to observe just twenty- four hours and no more. —Messrs. R. J. Oct 16-tf* Injured.—A valuable mule belong ing to Mrs. Ladd was severely if not fatally injured on the wire fence ot Mr. D. R. Flenuikcu on the outskirts of town last week. The mule in some way got loose, and while came in contact with the fence. the legislative department of the gov ernment. We expect to hear nothing bad of our representatives during either of the past sessions of the Leg islature. We shall confidently await the investigation. Death.—Information has been re ceived here of the death of Mr. A. J. Mobley which occurred near Wood ward’s on last Thursday, the 20th inst. Mr. Mobley was stricken with iralysis on the day before his death, iud the fatal disease was rapid in doing its work. The deceased was about fifty-five years of age, and leaves a wife and ^veral children. His friends and relatives Uivoughout the county will deeply regret toVanrn of his death. Grand Larceny.—The preliminary examination in the case of the State against J. M. McBride was held before Justice Cathcart on Saturday, the 22nd inst. The defendant was accused of stealing a bale of cotton from a planta tion in the northern portion of the county. The evidence against the de fendant was x circumstantial, but suf ficient to justify the trial justice in sending the case up for investigation in the Court of General Sessions and the prisoner was committed to jail in default of bail. Hauahan $45, it being the net proceeds of the entea- tainmeut held on the 18th inst., for the benefit of the Mount Vernon fund. Many thanks are due the ladies and gentlemen who inaugurated the enter tainment and so pleasantly and suc cessfully carried it through. This money I will deposit iu the bank for the present and earnestly hope that the Amateur Club will continue their efforts in behalf of the Mount Vernon fund till the sum of one hundred dol lars is realized, as it is my desire that at least that amount should be sent from this county. U. is said to be approaching the period of his dissolu tion fast. He has for some time been looking very thoughtful, and the color has paled from that particular spot whereby fishes indicate they have been caught too long.
