McCauley & Co. Oct 27-tf * All Hohob.—The semi-annual re ports of tlie students of the South Carolina College are out, and Fairfield stands head and shoulders above her 'sister counties. In all of the respec tive classes some of her representa tives have received the honorary dis tinction, which means an average between 90 and 100. This should be a subject of congratulation, not only to the students themselves and to their parents, but to all who are interested In the literary progress of the county. The Recent Entebtainment.—The following is a statement of the result of the entertainment on Tuesday night. The gross receipts amounted to #78.20. The expenses were: Wardrobe for tragedy, #10.92; colored lights, etc., for stage, #11.S0; lights and hall-rent, #6.95; servant hire, #3.10; incidentals, 93 cents. Total expenses, #38.20— leav ing a net balance of #45.45, which has been handed to Mrs. Wm. R. Robertson, the agent, for this county, of the Mount Vernon Association. CONVEBENCK APPOINTMENTS.—T h e South Carolina Coufereuca, of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, at Sumter, adjourned on Monday night. Oct 16-tf * The Town Chabtkb.—The follow ing is the full text of the Senate bill to amend the charter of Winnsboro, as amended and passed in the House: Section 1. That Section 3 of an Act entitled “An Act to amend the charter of the town of Winnsboro," approved March 18th, 1878, bo amended by adding at the end of the fifth line of said Action the words “or sale stable keepers,” so that said Section, as thus amended, shall read as follows: “Sec. 2. That the Town Council be authorized and empowered to levy a special tax of 2| mills on the dollar of all the taxable property within the corporate limits of ths town, for the period of three years; the proceeds of said tax. or so much thereof as may be required, to be used in liquidating the debt incurred in the improvement of the streets and fire department of the town. “Sec. 3. The Town Council shall have power, within their discretion, to impose an annual tax and to grant license for the same, upon such terms and regulations as they may establish, to keepers of ten-pin alleys and bowl- Sloau, 60 acres in Horeb UAvnship; consideration #625. Editors: Allow me to ac knowledge, through your columns, the receipt of a very handsome student’s chair, accompanied with these modest words, “A slight testimonial of the affection and esteem of your friends in the neighborhood of Hormah church.’' I do not wish, by thus making public one of those unobtrusive ministries which are seldom chronicled, and con sequently have no reward on earth, to rob my “friends” of their reward in the world to come. But as I do not know who are these friends,! am forced to take this public way of revealing myself. Say to them, if you please, that I took fnV scat in this lovely chair as soon as received, and composed a sermon I think of rather unusual “ten derness,” and delivered it last Sunday with rather unusual '‘emphasis," their kindness being the decidedly unusual incentive. Inter nos^ Messrs. Editors, allow me respectfully to suggest that if you want to hear a good sermon just send your pastor a present, especially it it be one like mine. My word for it, you will be amply rewarded. But please don’t forget to oftfer my sincere thanks to those dear—ladies I had almost said, for I strongly suspect that they arc at the bottom of it, as they usually are of everything that is gen erous and noble. T. W. Mellichamp. Ridgeway, S. C. Governob Butlek’s Opinions .— Governor Butler, of Massachusetts, who was in New York Thursday, ex pressed the opinion that the prospects for the Democrats electing the next President are good. He does not think the Democrats in Congress will do anything to fritter away the party’s strength. He says there arc but two a uestlons on which the parties can ivide—one is the sectional issue, the renewal of the fight between the North and the South, which the Republicans are making; the other is the issue upon a reduction of the tariff, which the Democrats are making, Governor Butler savs he stands squarely on the platform of the Democratic convention, of Massacliusetts, and insists that it is the duty of the national government to raise only so much revenue as is abso lutely needed for the economical car rying on of the government; that this amount of revenue should bo raised by means of a tariff, and that in levying that tariff, American enterprise and American industry should be inci dentally protected. In other words, the necessities of the government to be met by taxation should be made as light as possible, and the taxation should be so judiciously-distributed as to best foster American interests. As to the possible Democratic candidates for President and Vice-President, Governor Bullet'declined to talk, but he conceded that the “old ticket” had a great deal of strength throughout the country. In regard to the Repub lican candidates, Governor Butler said in his judgment the se'cction of Presi dent Arthur to head the ticket would be the wisest course for the Republican convention to pursue.
