On the 22nd of February the national
Democratic executive committee meets
in Washington to select the time and
place fur holding the national conven
tion.
It is now stated that Jefferson
Davis’s book has not been a financial
success. He has been invited to make
a lecturing tour in the Northern States,
but he declines.
Mississippi has thirteen colored men
in the House of Representatives and
one in the Senate. This is about four
teen more negro legislators than can
be exhibited by any Republican State

A prominent Pennsylvania Prohi
bitionist says that Mr. Blaine’s letter ^ ^ rtuvi .
proposing to divide the whiskey tax 266 D Lauderdale,
among the States has alienated from 1216 Ruff & Cloud,
him the support of the temperance
people of that State as a candidate for
the Prcsidenc".
General Longstrket is quoted as
saying that there is no Republican
party in the South, and that the only
chance of there ever being such a par
ty is to carry Virginia. He thinks
that if the Republicans fail to carry
Virginia at the next election “the last
chance of the Republicans in the South
will be lost.”
Executions as conducted by the
Choctaw Nation, in Indian Territory,
are a blood-curdling spectacle. The
doomed man is seated on a blanket,
one of his hands held by the sheriff
and the other by a deputy. Another
deputy, five paces away, then shoots
the condemned through the heart, using
a navv revolver.

Speaking of the efforts made to in
duce the interposition of the United
States Government in behalf of O’Don
nell, the Greenville News very appro
priately asks: “What right has the
government that hanged Mrs. Surratt
and Captain Wirz to talk about the
cruelty and injustice of anybody else,
anyhow?”
A Brooklyn church refused to ac
cept one man as pastor because he was
an eloquent man, “a second Beecher;”
but took another, who was accused of
having been recently discovered steal
ing one of Spurgeon’s sermons. As
the pastor’s salary is only $900 a year,
the “second Beecher” probably is not
very envious of the second-hand Spur-
Rcon. ,
Tiistgcueral impression among Dem
ocratic politicians in Washington seems
to bo that the national Democratic con
vention will be held in the West, with
the chances in favor of Chicago, which
is working hard for it. The friends of
St. Louis, Louisville and Indianapolis
are moving for their towns. If Chicago
should not be decided upon, Louisville
will stand the next best chance. Some
of the eastern Democrats are working
for Saratoga.
The popular notion of Texas is that
of a State where most men die with
their boots on, and that where there
are more people under the ground
than on it. Yet at only one session of
the Recorder’s Court in Fort Worth,
Texas, recently, two men were fined
$25 each for selling liquor on Sunday;
three were fined $5 each for being
drunk; two $5 for assault and batte
ry ; two $5 for disturbing the peace;
three $5 for cursing; one $5 for
gambling; one $30 for carrying a pis
tol; an*d only one man, who was accus
ed of gambling, was acquitted.

Charlotte Observer: “We thought
so. The Philadelphia iVess, which,
by the way, never lets an opportunity
escape to strike the South, in com
mentiug upon the municipal election
in Charleston, quotes the News and
Courier’s remark that‘there have been
very few elections like it anywhere,’
and adds ‘very few, indeed, outside of
Russia.’ Of course everybody under
stands the innuendo in this language,
brief as it is. And yet the Press ns an
intelligent journal knew that the ticket
elected was endorsed before the elec
tion by men of all parties, white and
black, and was so satisfactory to the
taxpayers of that city that no ticket
was run in opposition to it. But they
want to lie and nothing in the world
is going to prevent them from lying
about the South.”

The Dangers of Prohibition.—The
laws of this State already go as far as
it is safe to go, in the direction of pro
hibiting the sale of spirituous liquors.
No such liquors can be sold outside of
the incorporated cities, towns and vil
lages. In those cities, towns and vil
lages, such sale can be prohibited, if a
majority of the votes cast at a special
election held for the purpose shall be
in favor of prohibition. This is as fur,
we think, as legislation should go. It
is hard of course to resist the request
of a county that the sale of liquor shall
be absolutely prohibited there, but it
will prove to be safer in the long run,
we are confident, to limit action in the
direction of prohibition to the present
statutes, including tlte local option
law. While there is a strong and
healthful feeling in the State in favor
of repressing intemperance and limit
ing the opportunity for indulging in
intoxicating beverages, it must not be
forgotten that a very large body of
temperance people are opposed to re
strictive legislation; and that the Leg
islature, by going much farther in the
direction of prohibition, may introduce
the liquor question into State politics
We ueed not say what the result of
that would be.—flews and Courier.
