But “no separation for any cause?” Conjugal love and conju gal fidelity are the fountains from which must flow the peace and domes tic felicity of the marriage union, and once the spring waters arc poisoned and the stream, once the beautiful, limpid, laughing stream, swells into the angry, turbid torrent, and in its hurrying madness overleaps itself, and upon its frightened banks wrecked lives, blasted hopes and dead hearts in awful heaps lie buried. Wc should advocate the ex treme remedy only in extreme cases, and we hope the Legislature will so provide. Certaiuly it cannot be nec essary to jump from the old South Carolina doctrine of “no divorce” to the New England rule of “divorce for everything.” What will be done with the measure j now pending it is impossible to say, Vw Iowa editor retires from the 'istic field and concludes his ->ry in these words: “No true . can edit a newspaper.” Per- the conscientious gentleman would find congenial work in the legal profession. Chaklks A. Dana, of the New York Sun, is just mad enough over Carlisle’s election to the Speakership, and day after day writes of the certain defeat awaiting the Democratic party in the presidential campaign of 1884. This is the gospel according to Dana, but everybody knows that he is not the best political marksman in the coun try, and just as often misses as he hits the target. A divorce reform league has been organized in Ohio for the purpose of checking the divorce legislation of that State. Agent in Columbia, Mr. Julius Krentieis. C 1 STOVES A SPECIALTY No more important measure in its bearings, socially and morally, has yet been brought to the attention of the General Assembly than the one look ing to a re-enactment of the divorce law. This question is now before that body and within a few days our law makers will pass upon Hie wisdom or folly of its enactment. To the in quiry, What should be done? the press and the people arc entitled to speak, and to speak what is esteemed the wisest and tho best. Wc honor and revere the tinic-sanctioncd senti ment in South Carolina that what “God has joined together let no man put asunder,” and perhaps its fostered and cherished existence lias thrown around the marriage vows a sacred- ness here not everywhere to he found in the country. But after all, a calm and thoughful consideration will dis close the fact that upon the subject of divorces, as upon all others, an error upon the one extreme is necessarily fraught Avith the like evil consequences as an error committed upon the other. And tho advocacy of “no separation for any cause” stands about upon a plane, therefore, with the practice of granting divorces upn trivial and in significant complaints. A happy, golden mean between the extreme right and left ]positions seems to he the more tenable, (he more consonant with the dictates of reason, common sense and experience. Of course we arc not prepared to lend support to the pas sage of an act that would shake the foundation of the family government and trample under foot the conjugal- ties. Wo urge and maintain, and seriously too, that a separation approv ed and sanctioned by the law under tho proper limitations and restrictions tends rather to protect than to impair tho sacredness and binding force of the marriage contract. It “tends to protect rather than impair”, in that it . requires a strict and proper adherence to tho terms of the contract—an honest discharge of duty from husband and itxn wife alike, so long as the reia- tionshipe xists. It simply means that a contract so esteemed by the parties and by the laws of the State, snail be mutually obligatory upon the parties thereto, and that willfril and deliberate viola tions by the party of the first part shall be esteemed cause sufficient for the demand of a release and discharge from its obligations by tho partv of the second part. Ooald such an enactment with such an imperative and earnest demand for matoality do violence to the marriage jda? Oft the contrary it could not teach the legal lessons to all that WITTKOWSKY & BARUCH, CHARLOTTE. N. C., OFFER EXTRAORDINARY IN DUCEMENTS TO PEOPLE WHO ARE DOING THEIR TRADING BY MAIL.
