Mayor Rhett, of Columbia, has
telegraphed the National Cotton Plan
ters’ Association, now in session al
Vicksburg, to hold their next annual
meeting in Columbia. This step was
taken after consultation with Governor
Thompson and Colonel A. 1’. Butler,
the Commissioner of Agiiculture.
Several other cities are competing for
the honor of entertaining the next
Planters’ Association. The Conven-
f
lion has declined the invitation.
The Morning Journal, a spicy New
York daily, has argued itself around
to the startling conclusion that the
“only way John Kelly can harmonize
with the Democratic party is to nomi-
uale himself for the Presidency. John
Kellv, if nominated could leave New
York city with 70,000 majority.” Such
insulting impudence should scarcely
be tolerated even in a free country.
Boss Kelly lias neither chances, brains
nor character enough to dream of a
nomination for the Presidency, even
by the dranfry-inflated Greenback par-
tv.

Trite Charlotte Observer says:
The lawyers of the ninth judicial d;s
trict have formed an association to he
known, as we gather front an editorial in
the Citizen, “as .the Association of the Bar
of Western North Carolina: and is estab
lished to main the honor and dignify of tin
profession of the law, to increase its use
fulness in promoting the due administration
of justice, to cultivate social intercourse
among its members, and to prevent fit!?dd
mission of unworthy members.”
Are not the lawyers of our judicial
district ready and ripe for llic forma
tion of a similar association? The ad
vantages and benefits socially and pro
fessionally to be derived from such an
organization will be readily conceded
by every lawyer in the Sixth Circuit.
We hope the Winnstoro bar will take
the initiatory steps and claim the
honor of organizing the Bar Associa
tion of the Sixth Judicial Circuit.
