Genera! Jubal A. Early declares tbat tbe English language is not strong enough when be talks about Mahone. The Laurensville Merchant and Fanner says: Holman and Hewitt. How would that sound for 1884? The alliteration is good: ’the combination of names better; the rep resentation of States best* The men arc capable, and have both stood up manfully t fpr retrenchment and reform, during their Vjoiipessimal careers. The Democracy might go farther and do worse. ■ ^ vm I — Daniel Webster once said of the press: “Small is the sum required to much interest in Greenville, but its final deifi urination by the Supreme Court will be awaited with anxiety both In the friends and the enemies of prohibition all over the State. “Fox’s Kook of Martyrs’’ Contains the history an\l pictures of patronize a newspaper; amply reward ed is its patron. They are all pledged to labor and toil first and as long as there is reasonable hope for the “old tick* t, and then to throw their number®, strength and influence towards.secur ing the nomination cti Governor Houd- ly, of Ohio. The Hon. James G. Blaine expects ! to be Hie Republican nominee for the | Presidency in 1881. That party could Vnake 116 stronger nomination, and j Democrats would not welcome iris j nomination as foreshadowing a Demo- victory. However, it isn’t likely that! Mr. Blaine will be able to so harmon ize the warring clement of his party as to secure the coveted pVi/.e. The Atlanta Co list Hut inn has flop ped ovei* to Randall. Heretofore the Constitution strongly opposed the election of Mr. Randall to the Speaker- ship on account of Iris position on the tariff. Has the tarift’ question essen tially changed, or have the sentiments of Georgia and the country generally Shifted to the advocacy of protection? This step was taken after consultation with Governor Thompson and Colonel A. 1’. Butler, the Commissioner of Agiiculture. Several other cities are competing for the honor of entertaining the next Planters’ Association. The Conven- f lion has declined the invitation. The Morning Journal, a spicy New York daily, has argued itself around to the startling conclusion that the “only way John Kelly can harmonize with the Democratic party is to nomi- uale himself for the Presidency. John Kellv, if nominated could leave New York city with 70,000 majority.” Such insulting impudence should scarcely be tolerated even in a free country.
