Petit Laucknt.—The case of the State against James Pearson, on the charge of petit larceny, was tried be fore Justice Cathcart on Friday. The defendant was found guilty and sen fenced to pay a fine of fifteen dollars and costs or to be confined in the county jail thirty days. Thq prisoner was committed to jail in default of payment of the fine. The.Shields Case.—It will tp re membered that the counsel for Thos. L. Shields, who was recently tried in Charlotte for the murder of Joseph G. Sitton, the alleged seducer of Shields’s §ister Molin'*appealed to the Supreme Conri ®f Nprth Carolina for a new feal. Charleston fias been sensible enough to adopt the improved “stan dard” ai\d we are confident that Winns boro will follow her example. BOBBERS ON THE RAMPAGE. Several Houses ActuaUy Entered, and Sev eral Others At,t« mpted--The Work of an Organized Baud -Capture of a Suspected Party. Considerable excitement was caused in town oh Thursday morning by the announcement that a number of dwell ings had during the night before been actually entered by burglars, and at tempts made to enter several others^ The rogues seem to have made almost a complete-circuit of the town. In all there were four dwelling houses ac tually entered. At that of Mr. Jas. Q. Davis, on Garden street, tlie rob ber euterea, through a window, a room occupied by Major James Pbgan, and took a sum of Ynohey, about twen ty-nine dollars, from a pocket in hjs pantaloons. At Mrs. Duvall’s hotel,' on Washington street, the room of Mr. Charles Loper was entered, but noth ing was taken. At the residence of Mr. .]£. M. Huey, on Vandarliorst streef, an entry was made, and some eatables taken, hut no money or valua bles. At Mi;. J. N. Center’s residence, on Moultrie street, one of the rogues got into the room where that gentle man was sleeping. He woke up just when the lellow was well in, and the latter qf course beat a hasty retreat. Mr. Center saw that the thief was a white man. Unfortunately, he had no weapon handy, by which to arrest the rogue’s retreat. . Attempts were also made, as before stated, to enter several other resi liences. At Mr. James A. Brice’s, on Zion street, a party was heat’d at one of tbe doors, and the next morning it was seen that a ladder had been moved from under the house. At Mr. D. V. Walker’s, on Congress street, tracks were seen in th$ yard—evidently those of parties intent on robbery. At Mrs. Louisa Gaillard’s, opposite the freight, depot, the thieves entered the back piazza, and opened some trunks, but took nothing off, and made no attempt to get inside the house. At Mrs. Gailiard’s, on Garden street, some one went to a window and attempied to open it, but without success. The party seemed next to move on to the adjoining residence of Mr. Jno. S, Rey nolds. Here they wen^ into a small hot house attach fell to the southeast corner of the dwelling, took the flower-stand out( first carefully removing all the flow er-pots), by its means got on the roof of the hot-house, from which there was, easy entrance, through a window, iiito the chamber on the upper floor of ( the dwelling. The lady occupying this chamber, hearing the movements, call ed to one in the room adjoining, when the rogues seem to have taken flight.. At tlie residence of Mr. H. Ijf. Obear, on Moultrie street, there were signs of somebody’s having ♦ripd to climb the posts supporting the front piazza— from which they might, with little difficulty, have entered the rooms in the upper story. At .tbs residence of Mr. A. S. Douglass, hear the southern limit of the town’, there were evidences of an attempt to rob." Pre serves and other gatables were found in the piazza, anil there wore other signs of the presence of parties with no good purpose in view. Attempts were also made to get into the resi dence of Mr. Jno. H. Propst, on Zion street, of the Rev. D. E. Jordan, on Liberty street, and of Mr. W. D. Romedy, on Congress street, about opposite Mrs. Boylston’s. As before stated; these robberies ex^ cited much feeling in .{pirn/ and ^steps were at once taken to get el th^ guilty participants. Supposing that some of the robbers were probably prowling about the country, a party was organ ized to go in search of them. The party consisted of Messrs. T. H. Ketchin, J. Elder, U. G. Desportes and W. J. Elliott. Dcsving town about half-past nine o’clock, they went in the direction of Columbia, Meeting, Mr. Jno. W. Smart, he infoi tned them, that he had seen a white ran going in the direction of Simpson’s. They, moved at once to this ^oint, and were cleaning thbi woods, continuing his retreat. Just then Miv Ketchin saw the party approaching, Mr. W. J. Ejliott on horseback, in the lead. Mr. Elfrott, oncoming within a short dis tance of 'the man, leveled his pistol on him and told him to surrender. The fellow angrily said, “What in the h—11 do you want with me?” slipped his pistol into his side coatpocket and sat down. By this time a large crowd had come from Ridgeway, and the tramp was soon surrounded. His per son was searched, h*9 weapon taken, and he was lodged in the guard-house to await the arrival of the north-bound passenger train. He was brought here, and taken before Justice Neil 011 the charge of carrying a concealed deadly weapon. He was represeiited by Messrs. McDonald & Douglass, and, waiving an examination, was committed to jail in default of bail. The man calls himself Thomas Cullen. He is very defiant, and will talk but littje. He had a bank book, showing a deposit in the National Bank of Columbia. No other arrests have yet been made. In this connection we publish the following extract from a Charlotte dis patch: ' • • • “Two strangers were noticed in Statesville on Saturday, who are sus pected of the robberies recently com mitted. One was a medium-sizpd man, stoutly built',, with black hair, a little black moustache and side whis kers. The other Inyrt red randy l.aiy with short cut whiskers all over his face.. They were tyayed in a westerly direction from Statesville.” On Friday morning a suspicious character was seen hear Simpson’s. He measures about five feet', nine inches, weighs about 150 pounds, hair and whiskers sandy, and he wore a soft,felt hat.
