me a fit subject for the asylum when
they heard that I had bid adieu to all

journey to Colonel Owens’s, some five
miles distant, and arrived about sun
down. The' Colonel did not come hi
till a little after dark, but Mrs. Owens
surd her daughter, Mrs. Waldo, met
me in that good old South Carolina
style, and untie me foql that I was

still among friends. The Colonel is
going into orange culture, and already
has thirty-live or forty acres set opt,
some of which are in fine bearing;
and in a few' years will Lave enough
to make him comfortable. This being
the end of my journey, I returned to
Ocala, and nict with Colonel Eichel-
berger at the Mognolia Hotel. He
bad just returned from the Exposition
at Louisville, and I was pleased indeed
to meet him. YVhcti I approached
him he received me very cordially,
and when asked if lie could give me a
situation lie replied that he could riPt
give me a definite answer, as lie vVas
looking for a man from Virginia to
arrive on the first of October. He
said to me, however, that I could go
out to his place near town and make
myself useful in some way. In a very
short time he commenced to gather'
oranges, and I assisted in the packing
house about two weeks, most of the
time assorting oranges. After this he
wished me to sec one of his pet groves,
about thirty miles south of this place.
The day was warm—Ves, to one accus
tomed to a mme northern lattitudc, it
was oppressive. But on we jogged,
passing through a high, drv, pine
country, the ground often rising to a
much greater elevation than one would
h ive supposed could be found here.
