DOMESTIC.
HUMOROUS,
Dissolve aLfllc-ient p:*iman;auate of
potash in bf’' |! n^ water to give the ic-
qnired depth of color. It looks red
when tirst pnt on, but soon beormei a
beautiful brown. About two quarts cf
water will be sufficient to stain an ordi
nary sized bedroom, allowing it tvo
coats. See that the boards are perfect
ly clean and dry, and then w.th a large
painter’s brush stain the room all over,
painting on the permanganat» and wa
ter in the same manner you would paint
on wocdwc.k. When the loarda are
thoroughly dry, give them a second
coat il necessary. wh : ch must al o dry.
Wash and dry the brna’j, and then give
the whole room a thorough coating of
linseed oil. When the oil has well
toaked into the boards, begin rubbing
in with a cloth beeswax, melted in a
•’em jar over the hr', with a little tur
pentine, until it is the consist* ncy of
very thick cream. The floor must have
several coatings of beeswax and turpen
tine before it is bru-had with a laigs
brush, which is sold fo: this purpose.
A ter several applications of beeswax
and brushing, the flour will be iu a goad
onditiou, anl will only thm leqtire
polishing occasioL'ally an 1 rabbin ' with
beeswax when nece sary. It will ouiy
need now to make a bedroom look must
cheerful and comfortable two or three
rufs, one lor each side of the bed, an
other lor the fireplace. Indian matting
is preferable to a rng for the floor of a
woshatand.
Beans as Food.—The nutritive value
of beans is very great—greater than
almost any other article of food in com
mon use. Considering their richness,
they are probably the cheapest food we
have, but somewhat difficult of diges
tion, probably owing to the fact that we
rarely cook them enough and masticate
insufficiently. In preparing beaus for
the table they should first be well
soaked in cold water, then thrown into
boiling water and cooked of a medium
consistency, between a fluid a ad a solid,
neither loo thick nor too thin. They
require some acid when eaten, and a
sufficient amount of salt to render them
palatable. They may be eaten with
potatoes or other vegetables which con
tain more starch and less albumen,
rather than with too much bread or
meat.
Husk Beds.—A corespondent says
the way to make a husk bed is to put
the husks into plenty of water and
spread them on the grass to dry, first
spreading sheets on the grass, to keep
away the insects, etc, if possible.
When the husks are dry, dfaw them
through a fiax hatcbel, or with a fork
split them several times to make them
softer. Then till into a bed tick. Don’t
put in enough to be hard, but make a
good, comfortable bed. Have a slit in
the centre of the bed tick, and every
day stir the husks up. A button and
button hole in the bed tick will mrke
all secure and if you wash or scald the
husks every few years, they wdl keep
sweet, and you will have a cheap and
comfortable bed.
Lovely little wraps for the baby-car
riage are made of two pieces of flannel
—one, for instance, of blue, and one of
white: pink the edges of both. If the
blue is to serve for a lining, put a pret
ty design in outline stitch on it, and
then catch the blue and whit a together
with a row of feather stitch
ing about two inches from the
edge. If you wish to make it still
more ornamental, a handsome bow of
bine satin ribbon just above the em
broidery is handsome. How long it
will remain so depends on how well-
behaved the baby is,
Obanoe Float.—One quart of water,
juice and pulp of two lemons, one cof
fee cup ot sugar, when boiling add to
this lour tablespoons of coin-starch,
mixed in a little cold water; stir until
it boils, and let boil for ten minutes;
when cool, pour it over four or five
sliced oranges; oyer the top spread the
beaten whites of three eggs and one-
half cup of powdered sugar, flavored
with one teaspoonful of extract vanilla.
Succotash - Take the husks and silk
from one-half dozen ears of sugar corn
and with a sharp knife cut the kernels
from the cob. Place on the fire one pint
of Lima beaus, with sufficient water to
cover them, one hour before needed for
dinner; let them simmer slowly for
three-quaiters of an hour, then add corn
and boil fifteen minutes; season with
butter, pepper and salt, and send to
table hot. M Ik may be used instead
of water if preferred.
Potatoes with \ kkmicill.—Mash
and whip the potatoes light with but
ter and milk. Season with, sail, and
mound smoothly within a stone china
dish, or a bake dish that has a silver
stand for the table. Wash over with
white of eggs, and stew with vermecili
that has been broken fine, boil a few
minutes in hot water, then spread out
to drain upon a sieve. Brown in a
quick oven.
Tomato Salad.—Peel adn slice raw
tomato.s, lay in a salad bowl and season
with dressing made in the following
proportions: Beat together lour table-
spoons of vinegar, one teaspoon each of
sngar and salt, one-half teaspoon of
mustard. When these are well mixed
add gradually two tablespoons of best
salad oil.
Ci ment fob Kubbeb.—Powdered she-
lac is solteued in ten times its weight
of strong water of ammonia, which be
comes a fluid alter some time without
tne use of hot water. In three or four
weeks the mixture is a perfect liquid.
When applied it softens the rubber,
which hardens again as the ammonia
evaporates.
Cbullebs.—Four tablespoons of mel
ted butter, five of sugar, elevtn of
sweet milk, two eggs, one-half teaspoon
each of soda, nutmeg and cinnamon;
cut iu strands, twist in rings and fry in
boiling lard.
Swektbbbkads.—Scald in salted wa
ter; rt move stringy parts; put iu cold
water about ten minutes and drain in a
dry towel; dip iu egg and rolled crack
er; fry in hot batter or lard.

Birmingham, Ala., known as the
Magic City, has had a growth not less
remarkable than that of some of the fa
mous Western towns. In 1875 it was
a ragged village of two thousand five
hundred inhabitants. In that year it
was nearly depopulated by a cholera
epidemic. An era of railroad building
sit in in the State, and the intersection
of two lines there brought Birmingham's
population up to 4,000 in 1880. A cen-
eus just completed gives the city, in
1883, 11,348 inhabitants. The assessed
value of property has increased in three
years from $3,000,000 to $8,300,000.
The growth of the town is due to the
development of the iron-ore and coal
mines in the vicinity.
