of the State and the Nation. He was
for ten years a representative from the
Abbeville District in the National
House of Representatives, and during
one session served with distinguished
ability as Speaker of the House, win
ning friends and sympathizers for bin -
self, and impressing all with his char
acteristic dignity and impartiality.
The friend of McDuffie, the protege of
Calhoun and the assocutc of Wardlaw,
Perm, and Chevcs, he lived and mov
ed upon a higher plane than most men,
and breathed the very atmosphere of!
great ness.
Mr. Burt was, at the time of ids
dealt, engaged in the preparation of a
life of George McDuffie, and had near
ly.completed his work. Throughout
his long life, he was passionately d<-
vofed to his profession. He died in
his law office alone—literally with lhe
harness on!
Armistead Burt! the ripe scholar, the
accomplished lawyer, the brilliant
orator and the venerable statesman has
passed away, and all that is mortal
must dtep beneath the sod, while
the mind, the soul, the immortal Burt,
will live in the realms of peace and
eternal sunshine.
