The Concert TorNujWT.—We would
call the attention of onr readers to the
advertisement of the Wizard Oil Com

Theconcert given by the Wizard Oil Com
pany in Roddey’s IjaP last Tuesday night
was well attended and was in every way a
very creditable entertainment A number
of songs and plantation melodies were ren
dered splendidly, and Mr^ Sydney Burt,
the comedian, was thp soul of fun. The
farce, “ITie Two Messengers,” was a side
splitting and very truthful illustration of
the blunders made by the average errand
boy. The concert was a good one and was
entirely satisfactory to the large audience,

A Progressive Institution.—A
correspondent of the Rock Hill Herald
has recently written an excellent arti
cle, published in that paper, on the
present condition and prospects of the
Due West colleges. He notes many
evidences of prosperity and progress
in Ubttt msnruuons, ana writes vn very
crimnliinentarv terms of Due West and
iQr people. Of the system of instruc
tion in the Due West Female College,
te says: . • /. ,.
“But the most admirable featnre of
t)ip institution is the system of impart-
n| instruction. It has become a cus-
om among educators, in female col-
eges, to load down ypung ladies with
number of text books—dragging
them through a course of study in two
years which the ordinary yotfng man
completes with difficulty in five.
Young girls are expected to recite
ong lessons in arithmetic, algebra,
^ometrv, English grammar, history,
jitin, French, German and mnsic in
quick succession, and perhaps just get
through in time to take a lesson,in
drawing or painting. The only argu
ment that can be advanced for such a
system is that it involves much work
and little recreation, and this we think
is a doubtful argument^ fan its'ten
dency is toward mental cramming
without mental expansion. From such,
a system the Dne VVest Female College
entirely free. According to the
statement of its principal, no scholar
allowed .to take more than four
studies at the sgine time, and the^isual
number is three. Everything savor
ing of superficial ness is carefully
avoided; and a careful; knowlege of the
text biok Aid a consequent mental
development is earnestly, aimed at.
An examination of the textbook cur
riculum also shows that ihjs institution
Will compare favorably with any other
of its kind iu the South.” . . „

the United States vs. Samuel D. Sin

876, entitled “An act to protect all
citizens in their civil and legal rights.”
He decided that the first and second
sections of the apt are uncoiistitntlonal.
Justice Bradley took the ground that
tbe scope of the thirteenth and four
teenth amendments did^not extend to
the social fv. ivileges sought to bp guar-
amced by the legislation in question.
Tho court was quauimoufe with tire
exception of Justice Harlan, who said
that under ordfiiary circumstances he
would bo* slow to oppose his individual
judgment to his Colleagues, but. this
decision defeated what the people in
