THE SOUTH AT LOUISVILLE.
Editor McClure, of the Philadelphia
Times, speaks quite flatteringly of the
.Southern Exposition now in progress
in Louisville, Kentucky. He says:
“It is the largest and in all respects
the most complete exhibition ever held
in this country, with the single cx-
eepliou of the Centennial, and not only
the people of Louisville, but the peo
ple ofthe whole country, are to be
congratulated on its exceptional suc
cess and beneficent results.” The oc
casion constrains the Northern editor
to indulge in some kind reflections
concerning the probable future of tiie
“New South”. “The late Atlanta Ex
position and the present Louisville im
provement upon it,” ho continues,
“may be accepted as dating the new
departure of the‘New South’—I he de
parture that is to diversify Southern
industry and vastly enlarge the capital
and the permanent prosperity of the
Soiithern Slates. I carefully noted to
day the multiplied evidences of South
ern progress in the industrial and me
chanical departments of the Exposition

the coal and iron resources of tlte
Southern States would lie worthy of a
Pennsylvania exhibition, and it is
gratifying fo observe the general and
earnest drift of the Southern people to
the practical development of their
boundless wealth.”
The utterances of the great Philadel
phia journalist are timely and signifi
cant—tiinelv, in (hat the occasion of
the Great Exposition itself demands
recognition for Southern industry ami
Southern progress—significant, coming
as they do from (lie pen of one who
for many years looked through the
one-side glasses of Northern bias and
Northern Into. That the whole South
ern country has, since ihe lute War,
undergone a marvellous reconstruc
tion, socially, morally and materially,
as well as politically, does not, among
intelligent and thoughtful men, admit
of question.
The sluggish inactivities of ante-
helium days, incident to the existence
of slavery, have, with the old regime,
passed away, and from the ashes of the
dead past, have sprung up a new life,
teeming with energy, enterprise and
development, scarcely equalled in
the country’s history. The hates en
gendered by war are dying out, and
Northern enterprise and Northern
capital arc welcome as important far
tors in the rapid development of the
great resources of the country. The
practical results ol this happy turn of
afiairs arc that manufactories are
springing up everywhere over the
country, thoughtful attention is being
paid to scientific farming, modern im
proved machinery is being introducer
everywhere, and propeny, both real
and personal, finds ready sales in the
market at materially enhanced prices.
These arc but a few of the encourag
ing signs of the limes, and it is now
one of ihe accomplished factsof our his
tory that the South is fairly on the high
way to a material development that
will at once startle the world and
command its genuine admiration.
