met in NeiV York last Wednesday,
Governor Fish, General Grant, Bishop

ing present. Hon. J. L. M. Curry, the
general agent, submitted his annual
report. He said systematic agencies
foi; creating a healthy .sentiment in
favor of education at the South would
he needed for years to come. There
were encouraging signs, the growing
recognition of the alliance between in-
dustriai and mental training beui^onc
of the most important. Indu-trial
schooling he held to bt: a necessity in
the South. Discrimination between
the races in the disbursement of the
school fun i was unwise. The report
gives a statement of the condition of
educational progress in the States
among which the fund is divided. In
West Virginia the Legislature made
liberal appropriations. The Peabody
institutes for white teachers, five in all,
were very successful, ns was also the
one for colored teacher?, and the work
in general U progressing favorably. In
Virginia, Nprth and South Carolina,
Georgia, l^'orida, Alabama, Missis
sippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana
and Texas the Peabody institutes have
SiUbccn well attended. Following are
the amounts distributed in the several
States in the past year for public
schools, normal schools and colleges,
