ATTENTION'
It is suggested by the New York
Herald that the Democrats nominate
a Southern man for th8 Vice.Presiden
cy in ’84. The Augusta Chronicle on
tl:u other hand thinks the Republicans
had better nominate a colored ir.au for
that office. Wolf, it can at least be
safely said that the suggestions w ill do
fo go together. It would be a diflh-ult,
matter, certainly, to determine which
would 5e the biggest piece of foolish-
fiess, and perhaps still more difficult to
foreshadow the results of a campaign
when the issue is Rebel versus Negro.

The Greenville Netcs, in a very
spicy and sensible editorial on' Melton
and the District Attorneyship, says:
“hut we would like to sco District
Attorney Mcltori resign, and would
congratulate him most cordially if he
did so. The fact is, lie is too big a man
for the dirty work required of him in
the conduct of the election cases. A
person like Willard would find’ such
work congenial and is an appropriate
instrument for doing it. But Judge
Mcithn i£ a man of great intellect and
of splendid talent and is cast in a large
mould. If he cannot confine liisofilcirl
duties to sueh tilings as he can do witli
self-respect he ought to resign and let
the United State’s employ a pettifogger
and shyster who would 1 'revel in the
jury packing and other disreputable
tricks which arc the only possible
methods of convicting the political
prisoners now under arrest unless pub
lic sentiment is reversed.” Tlie Nett's
gives substantial proof of its kindly
feelings towards the brilliant District
Attorney, and makes tlie proposition
that if Mr. Melton will schcf to' tlie
News an official declaration of his re
signation, it will publish his card as
attorney-at-law for ten years free—
“we will do that miicT?,” it continues,
“as a testimonial of gratification that
so much splendid intellectual material
is to be no longer thrown away.” It
iUcarncstly hoped by a great many
people, who would like to bo kindly
disposed towards Mr. Mel toft, that'be
will vfesigtrlhe dirty office and resume
rgain the practice of his honored pro
fession. Earuei^eloqneiit and learned,
he stands to-day among the leaders at
tho bar in South Carolina, mid could
if lie would render invaluable service
to his native State. It is not yet too bite
to retrace his steps and atone for the
grievious errors of his past life.

Randall’s prospects.
1*!ie sanguine and enthusiastic sup

themselves”, s<J to speak. There' is a
certain class of people who always
flock to the support of the man who
may promise to be the victor in the
contest. Realising this fact Randall

and desperate efforts to convince the

distinguished candidate in question
will hive a “walk over” on the first of
