Court.—The Court of Common
Pleas was on Tuesday adjourned over
until to-morrow. Judge Fraser left
on Tuesday evening’s train for Colum-
,l>ia, where he expects to stay until
Friday.
Keligious Notice.—We arc request
ed to announce that services will be
held in the Presbyterian, church to
morrow morning at 11 o'clock—being
Fast Day service; to-morrow night at
74 o’clock; and on Saturday night at
t!ie fcnne hour.
—Messrs. R. J. McCarley & Cojiavo
r.n Elliott sixtv-saw gin for sale, for
which they will take Ninety Dollars—
one-half of the original cost. The gin
has only been used one season, and is
in thorough repair. Call at once. *
>. Sept 18 ^
—Most of our merchants have re
turned from the North and the new
stock of fall goods will soon be In the
market. Some of them are cutting
down their stock, owing to the cotton
prospects, while others have purchased
as largely as ever.
Key Found.—A key to one of the|
Jock boxes at the postofflee, No. 2,305,
was found on yesterday in McIntosh’s
blacksmith shop, just hack of Law
Range. The key has been lett at this
office, and the owner can get it by
calling and identifying it.
Ex1#rpri6e.—The new machinery
hall ot Messrs. R. J. McCarley & Co.
on Congress street is about completed.
These enterprising gentlemen exnect
to open their new business in all kinds
of machinery sometime in the early
fall, and a brisk trade may be reason
ably expected. The rapidly increasing
popularity of improved machinery
among the planters of the county is a
noticeable fact.
Thanks.—We are indebted to the
kindness of the secretarv of the South
:
Carolina State Press Association for a
copy of the minutes of the eighth and
nmth annual meetings—1882-83. The
pamphlet is neatly gotten np by Messrs.
Walker, Evans & Cogswell, of Charles
ton, and the acts and doings of our
brothers in council prove to be quiie
interesting and entertaining. Onr
thanks to the secretary for his thought
fulness.
:of all of them, prove them to be of the
finest stobk in the country. Mr. Fleu-
niken has seven Jerseys and four
Ayrshires. The Jerseys were pur
chased by him from a gentleman in
Northern Maryland some time during
the month of Juno, and the Ayrshires
he has had for some time past. The
Jerseys, it is claimed, produce the
finest quality of milk, while the Ayr
shires are widely known and valued
for the- fabulous quantity given.
The value for jthq purposes under dis
cussion will be’ readily appreciated
when figures themselves arc given.
Mr. Flennikcn is now milking three
of his cows, and he furnishes butter
regularly to four families in town, be
sides his own ; and in addition }ie sup
plies ten families every day with milk.
The food consumed by these cows,
during this season of the year, is
scarcely appreciable, or, at least, It
may be safely said, that in this particu
lar these new breeds of cows are no
more expensive in feeding than the old
scrub cows that roam over our hills and
are indigenous toourcliigatc. His larg
est Ayrshire took the pa'cmium to the
amount of $45 at the State fair last
year for being the finest in appearance
and for giving the largest quantity and
best quality of milk of any cow of
similar breed in the State. This one
now gives twenty quarts of milk regu
larly each day. Mr. Fleuniken pur
chased his Jerseys with the expecta
tion of selling their increase. There
is but little chance or opportunity for
imposition while dealing in this stock.
The pedigree of each and every one of
pure blood is duly recorded in the
books of the American Jersey Cattle
Club, with name and number, and
parties purchasing can always write on
to the secretary of the club, and in
this way, to a great extent, prevent
imposition. We earnestly hope that
onr people will soon realize that a
change in this direction will be econo
my in the end. Take the figures given
and they will speak volumes in sup
port of our position.

NEW HIGH ARM
Churchmen In Cotincll- A Full and Inotrur-
tive MeyMng at Dlackstock-Encouraging
Condition of the Church, Seminary and
College.
[HEP I5TED FOR THE NEWS AND HERAJ.D.]
’Bethel Presbytery met in regular
sessions at Blackstock on Saturday,
the 15th inst. at 74 p. m., and adjourned
on Tuesday to meet at Rpck Hill on
Friday before tbeflrst Sunday in April,
1884- The sessions were pleasant und
full of busy work. The reports from
the Church is shown that nearly all
were supplied with the regular minis
try of the Word of God. In several
congregations there has been a gratify
ing increase in the number of commu
nicants, and in many an increase in
the number of attendants upon preach
ing and other public services. The
whole prospect before us is hopeful.
The executive committee were direct
ed to arrange for the employ of an
evangelist and report at the next stated
meeting.
Members of the church living with
in the bounds of a different congrega
tion from that in which their names
are enrolled were urged to move their
membership to the church in whose
bounds their lionrj is placed, and the
sessions interested were directed to
attend to the matter without needless
delay.
The seminary at Columbia and
Davidson College—both of which are
in part under the oversight of this
Presbytery—received due attention,
and were both reported as doing a
good and growing work for the Church,
and both maintaining the high reputa
tion they have gained. Resolutions
were passed commending both to the
fostering care of the churches.
The overtures sent by-the General
Assembly to the presbyteries were
nearly all referred to special commit
tees to report at the next meeting. An
Personal.—Mr. W. S. Rabb, of this' overture from’ the Fort Mill session
place, left on Wednesday for Florida, asking “Can a church member be dis-
where he expects to make his home, ciplined from dancing’,’? was answered
September Fevers. — physicians
from all over the county report many
cases of malaria and other serious
types of fever. Severe colds attend
the fever in almost every case, and
some cases of pneumonia have result
ed, and still others threaten. The
damp, cool atmosphere during the
nights, with the usual autumn impuri
ties in the air, seem to be among the
contributing causes to the present
unfortunate health condition of the
county. Prudence and care may never
theless prevent many eases both of cold
and fever.

wishes attend him in his new home.
An old friend and college-mate, Mr.
L. A. Stuart, of Ninety-Six, S. C.,
made us a pleasant call on Wednesday.
Mr. Stuart is traveling for a large ma
chinery house in Baltimore, and we
are glad to learn is meeting with much
success. His genial face and hearty
laugh recall the memories of college
life, and we shall always welcome him
to Winnsboro. Health, happiness and

scenes are amusing when high-flown
attorneys figure upon the stage; and
the following recent colloquy between
two gentlemen of that fraternity rather'
tends to strengthen the assertion. A
juror is objected to':
Mr. Blunt.—“I object to Mr. Smith.”
Mr. Euphonious.—“May it please
the Court, we are willing, on the part
of otHr client (and we are pleased also
to say that we concur in his act of
kindness), to relieve Mr. Smith from
the tedious, confining and irksome
duty of remaining in the inconvenient
and contracted limits of tfie jury box
while this present uninteresting case, ib
which he can have no imaginable in
terest or bias, is in progress.”
Fine Cattle.—Mr. W. H. Flenni-
ken, of this place, now has a herd of
cattle, for value, quality and condition,
we venture to say, cannot be surpassed
jn the State. This may seem extrava
gant, but similar opinions have been
expressed by some of the best informed
mou'in the business, to say nothing of
the fact that the established^ pedigree
in the affirmative.
