An Ordinance—J. N. Center, Clerk.
Heieeris Shoes—McMaster, Brice &
Ketchin.
t; Poisons.—We desire to call special
attention to the ordinance to prevent
accidental poisoning, published.,in an
other column. It was well, for pru
dential reasons, that it should, have
been passed, and too much care cannot
be paid-to. its requirements.
The Dauber Snot*.—The two barber
shops in town have consolidated under
the firm name of Caldwell & McCall,
and their place of-busiliess is the next
door to the-postofilce. For the benefit
■ of customers they will keep open until
twelve o’clock on Saturday nights, hut
all customers «ae requested to call in
daylight when possible.
The Cotton Market.—The follow
ing is the report of cotton sold here on
Friday:^

refreshing
Rains.—Plentiful and
seasons are reported from all sections
of the county, and the beneficial effects
on vegetation generally are percepti
ble even at this early day. Of course
little or no good can redkonably be ex-
pccted to result to cotton from the re
cent ruins, and perhafs the corn will
not'oome out much from it, but gardens,
turnips and the like will be improved,
and favorable opportunities will be
afforded planters for abundant sowing
of fall oats.
A Good Idea.—We have been in
formed that Miss Kate T. Obear, Prin
cipal of the Wiunsboro Kindergarten
School, >,ha8 adopted the policy of
making the children learn their lessons
in the school during school hours.
This is a move in the right direction,
and we hope the example will be fol
lowed. ( ; 7
This system is b r e enforced by law
in Philadelphia and other places; and
advised by the medical fraternity.
<The advantages are numerous.
A systematic habit of study is ac
quired under the guidance of the
teacher, t,,> : -
Time is not left for idling and mis
chief in school hours.
Parents are saved great labor and
annoyance.
Children are not sent to bed in a
nervous,- anxious state.
If to the foregoing, the children are
not overtaxed with long or difficult 1
lessons, a great improvement in our;
old school system will, be effected.
Parents often require and expect too ■
much of young children and their
teachers.
Court.—The Court of Gene?a! Ses
sions convenes here on next Monday
morning, the 10th hist., and his Honor
Judge T. B. Frazer, of the third cir
cuit, will preside. The business of tlie
approaching term of the court, both
criminal and civil, from appearances
now, will be about as usual, when
compared with preceding terms of the
court during this season of the year.
The following prisoners, now in jail,
await trial next week, to wit: Alfred
Smith, arson; Love Reddick, grat'd
larceny; Htthnah Sampson, house
breaking; Osmond Johnson, grand
larceny, and Jacob Lee, selling whis
key without license and for assault and
battery df a high and aggravated na
ture. The following are out on bond,
to wit: Thena Boyd, larceny from the
freehold; Henry Rush, selling proper
ty under lien wilhout notice; Nancy
Davis, house-breaking; R. D. Wil
liams, bastardy; Melville Pqarson,
bastardy; Adger Thompson, eggra-
vated assault and battery. Warrants
have been issued for Alfred Crumpton
and Boswell Green, both for perjury,
and against Ada Nyers and Lou Nyers,
charged with burglary. The follow
ing are the appeal cases pending in the
Court of General Sessions, viz.: Oli
ver Hathcock, Walter Kelley, George
McConnell, Janies McConnell and
Rhett Jordan, for neglect of road duty
—appeal from Justice :Neii. Thos. J.
Rabb, Calvin Lemmon, Andy Ldni-
mon, Joseph Thompson and Henry
Rabb, for neglect of road duty—appeal
from Justice Evans. Primus Arnette,
peace .bond—appeal from finding of
Justices Neil and Cathcart on habeas
corpus. The Court of General Ses
sions will probably consume a greater
portion of next week, aud the remain
ing portion of the time allotted for the
sitting of the court will doubtless bo
taken up in the hearing of jury cases
on the civil side of the court ami of
equity causes.'
The New Postal Notes.—The new
post al notes for the transmission oi small
sums of money were put on sale at the
postotficc on Monday, the 3rd inst. In
shape they are nearly like bank notes.
They are printed in a blank form,
spaces being left for the names of the
postoffices from which they were sent
and at which they are paid. On the
right band side of each of the notes are
three columns of figures, cue for the
dollars, containing the figures of 1 to 4,
the second for the dimes, from 1 to 9,
and the third for cents, from 1 to 9.
The postmaster who sells one of these
notes will punch the figures indicating
the amount for which tlie note will be
received. Eor instance, if a note for
$3.52 is wanted, the figure 3 in tlie
dollars column, 5 in the dimes columr,
and 2 in the cents column will be
punched Out. All counterfeiting or
“raising” is thus prevented. The
notes may be bought of any value,
from one cent to $4.99. A charge of
three cents will be made in addition to i
the face value of the note. The great i
advantage possessed by the postal notes
duties called them to different parts of the
country where they are subject to disorders
of the stomach, produced by changes of
food And water of which this medicine is a
specific counteracter.
