nonneing his withdrawal from the con- ]
test for the Speakership, writes that iti i
his judgment‘Uo defeat the machina- \
tions of the protectionists and secure
the election of a Speaker who will re
flect the true Democratic theory of a
tariff for revenue only, it will be nec
essary to concentrate, rather than by |
having too many candidates represent- |
in Canada have reduced the consutnp- j it'g similar views, to promote the
chances of the common foe. By my
withdrawal Kentucky will be united
in tiie tight, and 1 shall use all my en

didate who, presenting the true prin
ciples of tariff reform, shall show the
best prospect of defeating Mr. Ran

York Herald has this to shy: “How
far Mr. RanthiU's friends have counted
upon divisions in the ranks of the
Democratic tariff reformers to secure
his success we do not know. But we
suspect the tariff reformers will know
how to concentrate their forces when
Congress assembles, and Mr. Black
burn’s withdrawal is, in that connec
tion, an event of some importance.”

The Freethinkers assembled in con
vention at Rochester, New York, by a
vising vole, thanked the New Y"ork
Herald for giving to"^ the public the
proceedings of the meeting. Tim sec
retary was so appreciative and grate
ful os to say that the Herald “is manly
and true enough to give the news of
whatever shade of opinion it might be.”
This is all true, but any other great
and enterprising newspaper would
have done likew ise, and we can see no
necessity for special thanks. However,
the Freethinkers have a right to be
grateful whenever fho spirit moves
them, and we won’t complain.
The Georgetown Enquirer says:
The Georgetown Enquirer and the Or
angeburg Times and Democrat are growing
excited over the tariff discussion. Peace,
gentlemen, you certainly can “agree to dis
agree.”— Winnsboro News and Herald.
We are glad to say to our peacemaking
friend that the belligerents, or rather one
of them, buried the hatchet last week. The
first step towards an armistice was taken
by the Enquirer, which perceived that it
had done its opponent an injustice and
frankly acknowledged the error into which
it had been betrayed. We are now quietly
awaiting a suitable acknowledgment from
our Orangeburg contemporary, and we
have no doubt that it will be both graceful
ami sincere.
Socrates called beauty a short lived
tyranny; Plato, a privilege of nature;
Theophrastus, a silent cheat; Theocri-
fus, a delightful prejudice; (Jarneadcs,
a solitary kingdom; Domitian said
that nothing was mote grateful;
Aristotle affirmed that beauty was
better than all the lettersof recommen
dation in the world; Homer, that it
was a glorious gitt of nature, and
Ovid, alluding to it, calls ’ it n favor
bestowed by the gods. Are they all
right? It certainly seems so, and h >w
strange! It is at once with Homei a
“glorious gift of nature”, and with
Socrates “a short lived tyranny.” Yv'hat
say those who are entitled to speak
and with authority?
