By this it shows that out ot this large
amount of taxes ?7,502.89 is distributed in
pur own District.
'Flieve are about t,070 taxpayers, and in
that number we have one taximyer who
owns about 400 slaves and over 18,000 acres
of land. There are six taxpayers who own
over 250 each; ton who own over 100, mid
thirty-three taxpayers who own 50 and 100.
It will appear by this return tliat the in
crease among our slaves, compared with
last year’s return, is 130. Last year’s re-
tuVn showing tlie number to lie 14,849.
Tiiis may seem strange to those who wit

fact, and must, 1 think, be accounted for
from the kind and humane treatment'
which they receive. '

In the Winnsboro News of August
8,1868, we find an editorial giving the
Valuation of lands in the different
counties of the Stale, compiled from
the census of 1.860, as follows:
ty tjiat before this is done the site of
the momunent. will be changed. Some
scientific gentlemen thjnk that thereof
of the State House attracts electricity
to the monument, which is so near to
it, and it is thought that when the
permanent roof of the State House is
put on it will be absolutely necessary
to remove the monument. There is a
gpo'd deal of opposition here to the
present site. It is so close to the Stipe
Douse Unit the momunent is over
shadowed by the ugly unfinished sides
thereof.
It is suggested that the Washington
statue now in the State House be plac
ed on a granite pedestal and substitut
ed for the Confederate monument—be-
