Iii response to the toast to the Presi dent of the Con federate States, given at the recent reunion of tiu survivors of thp Sixth Itcgioient, Cojonel Ilion made tbe following response, which is at once so pointed and so appropriate that we give it a place here: v Brother Survivors: The toast to which yon have called upon me to.re- . tpoud has for its subject one that enters so deeply in mv heart that I doubt whether my longue can find words udcijuate to express my sentiments. it is especially creditable to later times that the civilized world does not withhold bonor. from the names df unsuccosiiul heroes,®martyrs and jifl- i riots. Whatever may be thought by those against whom 'they contended, tlie names of Emmett, Kossuth, Kosci usko and Davis will always be written in imperishable characters upon the memories of the good and just of every nation. As to Jefferson Davis, lie only need ed success to have Ins name enrolled side by side with that of Washington. As a statesman there is ho drawback to the fame of Davis; and it Would be unfair to Washington to institute a comparison. We have erected no marble pile to preserve his memory. Thank Ilea veil, he still lives with his people. Ucsides, ho needs no monu ment. lie lias an everlasting one in the hearts of all surviving Confed erates, which will be perpetuated in the hearts otrr children upd our chil dren’s children through remote 'gene rations. lie has erected to his, own memory a monument more enduring than brass in bis great work, “The Pise and Full of the Confederate Gov ernment”. And his enemies have dedicated to his memory a monument. As long as this solid globe shall stand there 'will be this monument. The battlements of Fortress Monroe, while they exist, will bo the monument; let those battlements bo torn down ami the earth sown with salt—the pround will be the monument; let the very around be dug up anil carted to tbe sea—and the chasm itself wili be tlie monument of our llcro-Murtvr- Patriot. Messrs. Editors: Some time since a communication appeared in a Northern paper over tlie signature of a Southern colored teacher, In this communica tion appears tt?o startling news that down In a certain portion of Fairfield, near (lie banks of the Watercc, there H. tfti ..jbih wtotetl look charge of the school, “floorless and tireless”; that there were eighty pupils in said school and but one read ing book for tlie whole school; that tlie children were half naked and “gar ments pinned together with thorns”, etc. Now, Messrs. Editors, 1 have (through tlie kindness of the citizens of Fairfield; presided over the educa tional interests of tlie county for several years, and while I am obliged to admit llicro arc some school-houses which arc not as comfortable as they should be, I have never yet seen one without either A fire-place or a stove. The Hea of only one took for eighty pupils is too preposterous to think about. I have seen every school-house in 4 bc county; have visited the one in question, and had I found the house in the condition represented—a teacher attempting to instruct a school of eighty children with one book, and parents having no more regard for their children’s comfort and decency than to send them to school half naked and their garments pinned together with thorns when pins are so cheap—I would certainly have taken the respon- sibilty of closing tlie school, and ad vised tlie Trustees to hunt another loca tion. I venture the assertion that there is no section of Cbuhtry, North or South, in proportion to number and amount of taxes collected from them, where more money is expended for the education of tlie colored people tl an in Fairfield county. As a general thing tlie colored people take great interest in their schools, and put them selves to great inconvenience to let their children have the advantage of them, and when told to get books will I HAVE NOTIFIED THE FARMERS of Fairfield to bring in their OLD GINS for repairs. But they are not doing so, and I am not able to disappoint a purchas er of a new gin for the repairing of an old one. So parties need not bring their gins hi just when they heed them and expect to “take them out in my wagon,” or “get them Saturday when the wagon conies in ” I want to do all the work I can. I hope the GIN MEN won’t CROWD us in SEPTEMBER just when they want their GIN J. lil. ELLIOTT, SR.
