AGRICULTURE.
The best land for corn is sod ground
that has been turned up in the e&iiy
fall. Either harrow or work it up
with a cultivator several times in the
spring before planting, and the birds
will each tune destroy multitudes of
larvse. fiai ow in the manure or
work it in with the cultivator. If a fer
tilizer is used sow it bountifully broad
cast, Be sure the ground is clean and
well tilled before the seed is put in.
Keep the surface thoroughly stirred
once a week from the time it can be
worked until the tassels appear. Har
row just as it makes its appearance
through the soil with a tine short tooth
harrow that breaks the ground in the
hill or drill.
i TnOaE who have been in the loose
practice of storing their winter fruit in
cellars in which miscellaneous garden
vegetables are placed, should adopt as
soon as possi. ie the improvement of
making lor the fruit a separate apart
ment which is to contain nothing else.
In some instances this may be elleoted
by simply running a single bnck wall
eight inches thick across the cellar, and
hanging the windows so as to allow easy
ventilation. If ihe bottom is too wet,
mane a door of water-lime cement. A
thermometer costing buy cents win
show just how cold to keep this room
in winier. btored and managed as we
have described on former occasions,
good winter apples will keep into June.
* Food for the Fat.—There is little
complaint among agricultural people of
being too lat, but should a corpulent
person desire to reduce their size the
rollowing Irom the Medical Journal
may help them: There are three clus

the fat, therefore, would use less lat and
more ot lean meats, dsh and fowl, less
of hne tiour, and more of the whole pro
duct ot the grains—except the hulls—
less ot the sweets, particularly in warm
v.tather, and more of the fruit acids in
a mild lorm—as m apple, sleep less, be
less indolent, and labor mure in the
open ail, the lat would disappear to a
Certain extent, at least, with uo loss of
real health.
DOMESTIC,
There is a decided tendency toward
lighter colors for carpets, for uphol
stery goods, and for wall-coverings.
Soft neutral tints are chosen iu carpets,
and the object is to avoid all striking
effects both in design and color, so that
the carpet may serve as an unobtrusive
background for the furniture. Black
and very dark grounds are disappearing
from all carpets except those for halls,
libraries and dining-rooms, while those
for drawiug rooms, parlors, reception
rooms, chambers, and sitting rooms
have subdued shades of old blue, olive,
India red, sage green, ecru, or golden
brown, the Terra-cotta, Sevres blue,
Pompeiian rose, and imperial yellows
used last year are still seen, with pearl,
sky blue, and shrimp colors for the
lightest grounds. The designs are small
and intricate, being made up of geome
tric dgures, or palms, latticed bars,
tapestry patterns, conventionalized
dowers of small sizes. Oriental designs
copied literally from antique rugs, or
else the entire carpet may be a single
plain color, or a melange of many colors
without any set pattern All carpets
are bordered, and the same good designs
and quiet colors shown in royal Axmin-
sters may be found in the most inexpen
sive ingrains.
A Partially Dead Man.
The Morning Herald, Baltimore, Md.,
states: Major B. 8. W hite, of this city, de-
8crii.es his miraculous cure as follows. *‘I
have been a partially dead man for ten
years. Doctors attributed my sufferings
to the enlargement of certain glands. Toe
quantity of medicine I took witnout relief

HUMOROUS,
Another hoop-snake has been discov

who saw it did not adhere to the con

“And you say that the snake did not

“No, he did not roll after me.”
“Ton didn’t jump behind a tree, then,

“No, sir,”
“And the leaves on the tree did not
wither and die within two hoars ?”
“No.”

Tbfre is no crop for which it is so
important that the soil be evenly fertil

In otht r crops, even il one part be Je«-

Worth Knowing.—Half ateaspoonfnl
of common table salt dissolved in a lit
tle cold water, and drank, will instantly
relieve heartburn or dyspepsia If
taken every morning before breakfast,
increasing the quantity gradnaliy to a

water, it will in a few years cure any
case of dyspt psia, if at the same time
due attention is paid to tne diet. There
is no better remedy than the above for
oonsiipatioa. As a gargle for sore throat
it is equal to chlorate of potash, and is
entirely sale. It may be used as often

dead trees. He first threw them into a
pond of water, and let them lay for a
couple of dais. He then set them, and
nearly all lived. That orchard for sev
eral years has taken the first premium
of the Stale Horticultural Society,
It is not possible to give the straw
berry patch too much water, provided al
ways that the land is so well drained as
to give water free escape. This is true
of nearly all farm crops, though barley
is more sensitive to excess of water than
any small grain. Corn is injured by
excessive moisture, bnt it is more from
chilling the soil than from the effects ol
water itself.
Farmers should experiment with all
kinds of fertilizers within their reach.
Quite otten there is found on some farms
muck that can be profitably drawn to
land adjoining or iu the near neighbor
hood. The quality of muck varies so
widely that lack of success with it in any
place is no evidenco that other muck
will fail elsewhere. The best muck con
tains lime and phosphoric acid.
Wherever wood ashes can be had an
excellent fertiiizei may lie made by any
farmer. Let him pm chase pure ground
bone; mix with its weight of ashes and
saturate with water. The alkali iu the
ashes takes hold of the grease in the
bones.and the mixture is a valuable one
for any grain crop. When dried with
fine ground gypsum it can be drilled in
with the seed.
The evidence recently supplied by
the Scottish Chamber ol Agriculture as
serts that the effect of June is most
durable on pastures that are grazed. It
lasts longer upon good than upon bad
land, and Jon er U|>on clays ana heavy
land than on light land. A good dres
