Clyde and E. T. Thomas. This is tlie
same syndicate, that is behind, the East
Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Rail
road, and is the most powerful organi
zation that has ever yet takefu hold of
Southern roads. Sency, Brice and
Thomas repeCseut the old Seney Com
bination atid the Metropolitan National
Banjt, . Scott is of the firm of George
S. Scott & Co. Baker and Fahnestock
represent the First National Bank of
New York, while Clyde is pf the great'
shipping house of William P. Clyde &
Co. This party will control about
2,500 miles of the Richmond & Dan-
ville r and 1,500 miles of the East Ten
nessee, Virginia and Georgia, making
in all about 4,000 miles of road, whose
gross earnings are fYotn ten to twelve
million dollars per anuum. The prpp-
erty acquired perfects a system -that
jayes direct cutlet for all Mississippi
River and Southwestern points to the
Atlantic seaboard at Washington, Bal
timore and otberr points. It extends
from.’ Washington, vi&Vthe Virginiw
Midland, to’Danyillo, Va., and ifrotr
West Point, on the Chesapeake, to
Richmond. It then continues via the
Piedmont Road, Carolina Central and

Some difficulty was experienced by
the committee in deciding as to whom
to award the respective prizes, and it
was found necessary in some instances
to rciall tlie young speakers to tlie
stand. Tlie prizes were presented by
the Rev. Horace Rnbb in behalf of tlie
committee, and in doing so lie took occa
sion to congratulate Mr. Keller and his
scholars upon the success of the cele

Mr. Warren J. Scruggs, represent
ing his fellow-pupils, presented to the
teacher a nice, valuable present, and
Mr. Keller responded in a happy man
ner. '
The above, with the additional fea
tures of an excellent dinner and a
genial and . sociable crowd, made
upon the whole a very interesting and
cigoyablo occasion. We congratulate
Mr. Ktfiler and our friends of that
community upon the success of tlie
