Mabkkt CHloK8.-=-thei , 6 aire several
points to be observed in raising fowls,
the profit being more or less according
to the method of breeding. Much de
pends upon the kind of fowl used. The
.Brahma is one of the best we have for
general purposes, as that breed grows
to a large size, lays well, and is hardy,
but while it possesses many good qual
ities, it is unfitted for producing broil
ers. as it is “leggy” when very young,
and does not readily fatten until it is
nearly matured. A cross of the Leg
horn on the Brahma is one of the best
that can be male if early pullets are to
be ki pt for laying in the fall, as such a
cross combines the quick growth of the
Leghorn with the size, vigor and har
diness of the Brahma, and the broilers
so produce!, though a little slower in
reaching the proper weight, are fint-
boned, plump and attractive in appear -
ance, possessing rich, yellow skin and
legs, in crossing Leghorns with the
large breec s. uniformity of color can be
secured by mating brown Leghorn cocls
with partridge, Cochin or dark Brahma
liens,or wmte Leghorn cocks with light
Brahma or white Cochin hens.
Of the pure breeds there is nothing
that can compare with the Plymouth
Bocks lor piouucing the most salable
chicks up to the age of three months,
and the younger ones as broilers are
“ u —- A -' 11
agers and aolive, they grow last and
make a plump carcass. The American
be brig he (Wyandotte), rival the Ply
mouth Boca in all qualities except har-
diness, and haye yellow legs at every
stage of growth, while tiie legs of Ply
mouth Buck pullets are dark, turning
yellow afterward. The only objection
to them is that being a new breed they
are at the present time too closely bred.
The Laugsbau, anew br^ed, is as fine
in plumage, size, laying qualities and
iiesn as one would wish;but, having dut k
legs, many buyers obji ct to them. The
objection, however, is owing to a time
honored prtjudice, tor the Lanj.slian
and iiouuan (a nark-legged fowi) are
supeiior for ine table to nearly ah the
yeilow-legged breeds. A cross of the
game with, the large breeds gives a fowl
with a fuller breast and liner bone,
which should be encouraged, as the
smaller the amount of ofial the better
the quality. For market chicks, there
fore, the broilers should come Irom the
Leghorn-Brahma cross, the larger sizes
from the Plymouth Books, Wyaudottes
Houdans amt Langshans, while the
adults should be produced from Brah
mas or Cochins crossed witu the Ply
mouth Bock or Boudau. The best ca
pons uie a cross oil the coloied Dorking
and datk Brahma, and the Jargestlowls
are usually a cross of the Houdun and
Brahma the first season,' and the pro
duce mated with Plymouth Bock the
second stnson. Black Spanish, Ham-
burgs and Polish, though excellent lay
ers, are interior as market chicks. It
success is desired bteeilers should be
cartful in seheting the breeds most
suitable, as it is more important
than any other feature in the manage
ment.
At a recent meeting of the New York
Sugar Association, at Genoa, President
Williams said ol the sorghum sugar in
dustry in the North: "\ie are going to
make a sirup that is superior to that ot
New Orleans. We aie expennentiug
all the time to perfect the process ol
manufacture. 1 expect in my any ro
see glucose driven Irom our homes by a
better and purer article.”
Young chickens drink a great deal ol
water, but they, m tommou with all
animnl-s know just how much they
need. Mix your corn and dough very
dry and crumby, and let the fowls di ink
flesh, cool, clean water utter they are
through eating. If your mess is mixed
too thin and sloppy you will tone them
to swallow more water than tl ey need,
in order to get at their teed.
Chop estimktes made at an early
date aie not of much value, as past ex-
perio nee has shown. So far, however,
as any opinion can be formed from the
scattering repoits in regard to winter
wheat, the outlook is not a favoral le
c ne. Nor is there any apparent likeli
hood of an active foreign demand, which
should it occur, might compc ns.de for a
reduction of our surplus by enhancing
its price.
Pigs need a run atgrass. An orchard
is a fine place tor swine; it affords good
grazing lor the pigs, while the trees are
benetitted by the destruction of insect
pests. Young pigs may be fed milk at
an early age with profit. Much de-
.ponus upon the tarly siuit that an ani
mal gets.
The term hybrid is quite loosely used
by many horticulturists ami farmers.
If two varieties of one specimen are
united or crossed, we get a variety-hy
brid; if two species of cue genus are
crossed we get a species-hy brid; if two
species of difierei t genera are crossed, we
get a genus-hybrid.

It is estimatud that the monthly re
ceipts of egge in New York aie 6d,Oh0

make the aggregate egg trade of the
national metropolis over 50,01)0,0(10 an

Is answer to inquiries why hens lay
soft-shells eggs, it may be stated that
the difficulty is caused by a lack of
bme. Pounded oyster shells should
be witbiu easy reach of the fowls at all
times.
One of a set of small drawers in my
pantry is called the salve box. In one
eud is a small compartment like the till
of an old-fashioned chest, and in this
are kept salves of various kinds. In
the drawer there is always to be found
an abundance of old, soit cotton and
linen cloths, with a few strong strips
for bandages, a ball of soft yarn, (which,
being flexible, is much better than twine
for tying up inflamed fingers,) fluffy
bits of cotton batting and pieces of old
kid gloves for spreading salve upon.
Something very'adhesive.hke balsam fir
salve, is a necessity, as a very little
here and there alcng the bandage for a
sore finger will make a string unneces
sary, beside keeping the cloth m place
much better than if tied on.
Butteb and sugar, about three parts
of the latter thoroughly mixed with one
of the lormer, are excellent to atop a
cough caused by a lidding in the throat.
If this does not avail, melt the mixture
and add a little vinegar. Many find
relief by eating a little rock salt, or, if
this is impossible to oltain, table salt
will answer the same pui pose, although
the first is much tlie better. One
troubled with a backing cough should
never be found without a bit of hoar-
hound candy or a tew kernels of rock
salt in the pojket, with v uich to check
an attack while at church or during
- uuMb.
Meet half an ounce of camphor gutr,
hi If an ounce of glycerite, and ono
pound of mutton tallow, and apply to
the hands eveiy night. It will whiten
them nicely. For home-made camphor
ice, melt half a teuoupful of mutton tal
low, put into it a piece of camphor gum
about the size of a large hickory nut
<»nd add a teaspoonful of olive oil. Pour
into a mould to harden. Pulverized
borax is excellent to drop iuto the water
to soften the skin. If your hands are
rough when you wash them, dip your
fiugers in the boiax and rub your hands
thoroughly together.
The white of an egg, iuto which a
small teaspoonful of sugar has been
stirred, is an excellent remedy tor croup.
Give this at the first symptoms, aud if
the hoarse cough is not soon checked, a
second is needed, and in rare cases a
third. The whites of three eggs, and
sometimes the whites of two, will act as
an emetic. The liitle patient should
have a teaspoon!ul of castor-oil at the
begu iling, aud (lieu a litttle gooie oil
occasionally, until the cough is looser;
and the throat aud chest should be
anointed with the same.
Quite a nice thing in pin-enshions is
tlie bolster cushion. It is about a quar
ter of a yard long and eight inches
round. Tho ease is first made, stuffed
and gathered at tlie end. Then it is
covertd with velvet, embroi lered silk
or satin, or any pretty material. To
each one is attached an oruamtntal tas
sel, aud a cord from one eud to the
other, by which to suspend the cushion
from the top of the mirror.
Fou acute pain iu the stomach. Wring
a good-sized piece of flannel from this
solution, aud apply hot to the part af
fected, laying over it another piece of
fianuel; cover the patieut well in bed
and lay a hot bric& at the feet.
The last fashion for tidies and bureau
covers is to have them striped at the
ends, aud upon each stripe laige polka

Uie stripe ibel: are woven. These dots
cun bo supplied in raised embroidery,
and are very effective.
A tastefue home-made cover for a
small staud is of a pretty shade of Car
ton flannel, light blue, tor instance,
trimmed with rows of black velvet rib
lion, feather-stitched on i.nl finished
around the edge with wouhn fringe,
which one can make, if necessary, of
split zephyr of color to match.
The reason why cabbage emits such a
disagreeable smell wlu n boiling is be
cause tlie process dissolves the essential
oil. Tlie water should be ch urged
when the cabbage is half-cooked, and
it will thus acquire greater sweetness.
On ct ming curt of a waim room or
hall, to walk home on a cold or damp
night, do not indulge iu too much con-
versutlt n, however agreeable your es
cort may be. Breathe through the
nose, aud keep the mouth shut as much
us possible.
If you wish to pour boiling hot liq
uid into a glass jar or tumbler it can be
safely done by putting a spoon In the

cold air must not reach it.
The unpleasant odor hit in the breath
alter eating onions is entirely removed
by a cup of strong coffee, aud the coffee
being prepared while the onions are
being cooked counteracts the smell.
To keep ice from windows take a
sponge or ordinary paint-brush aud rub
over the glasn once or twice with a little
cold alcohol. This not only keeps the
panes tree from ice but gives the glass
a fine polish.
An attack of indigestion caused by
eating nuts, will be immediately relieved
and cured by tne s mple remedy salt.
Medical m< n recommend that salt should
be useit w itu nuts enpccially when eaten
at night.

11 Two cases of rapture of the dram of
the ear, caused by diving, have come
antler treatment at one of the Philadel
phia hospitals. The explanation of
these cases is that the water, forcibly
impinging npon the column of air in the
external auditory meatus, suddenly in
creases its pressure npon tne membrane
while the normal pressure npon the in
side remains unchanged;tbe Eustachian
tube permits the air to escape from the
middle, and thus there is no resistance
given to the interna! coiamn of air, and
the internal force of resistance being
suddenly exceeded by the external im
pinging force, rapture ensues- To p:e
vent this, when diving, the pressure
upon the membrane from without should
be compensated for by an equal resist
ing pressure from within, that is a full
inspiration should be taken prior to
diving, the month being kept shut, and,
to prevent the escape ot air by the nose,
the posterior nares to be closed by ele
vating the soft palate.
