What Is It?—Mr. B. II. James,
jjfrhile recently superintending some
.work on the bridge over Possum

seems to be the broken tooth of some

piece of petrified woo{l. The opinions
of those who have seen Yt are divided.

uniqh of the survivors of the regiment
on the first Thursday in August. Quite
a lively discussion was had upon the
question whether the annyal dinner
should be a general picnic or a private
dinner, confined to mejnbers of the
regiment and their iuyiied guests. It
was finally decided that,it should bo
provided only tor tliq survivors and
such guests as the committee of ar
rangements may see lit to invite. The
following gentlemen compose the com

Strieker, E. T. Atkinson, John A.
Blake, J. L. Agurs, W. II. Harden

third grade on Saturday. There were
only fpnr applicants for the first grade

, A Serious Accident.—Mr. j. M.
Elliott, Sr., met with a very painful
accident on last Saturday, the 7th inst.
While working with some machinery
in iis shop his fingers became entan
gled in the knives of the machine, and
resulted in considerable injury to the
two front fingers of his right band.
The amputation of tho fpre finger was
deemed necessary, and Mr. Elliott is
tiow getting along nicely •under the
circumstances. Our sympathies are
with him fu bis misfortune.
From Houston to San A*ntonio there is
a monotonous continuation of level
aud rolling prairie, destitute of tilii-
ber, save a few scrub oaks fringing
the water courses. Water is every
where scarce in places, cistern only
being obtainable; and to the palate of
a South Carolinian the quality is sim
ply odious. Ice seems unknown. All
this country* asul onward to the Rio
Grange i is .best, aiul portions of U
only, adapted to gVrzing. Rain falls
sometimes as seldom as ten to twelve
months,. The natives are mostly cow
boys and Mexican laborers, the latter
of whom are held in considerable con
tempt. Northeast of San Antonia are
German settlements, where, notwith
standing the disadvantages of poor
soil, scarcity of water, and infrequency
of rainfall, may bo .seen softie-of tW
most beautiful farms at the South.

Personal.—Messrs. M. W. Doty
and John Cathcart returned home on
last Sunday from Lexington, Va.,
where they have been attending the
session of the Virginia Military Insti
tute. We hope they will enjoy their
vacation.
Senator W. Z. Lejtnor, of the Cam

, Wnv is It? ; -j-AI^yge meeting of tho
Chester Couifty institute was held in
Chester on Monday night, the 2nd inst.
Fifty-one teachers were enrolled mem
bers of the association, and altogether
it was an enthusiastic meeting. .Will
some one tell us why it is that such
meetings cannot be had of the teachers
of Fairfield? Is it because we haven’t
a sufficient number ..to assemble in
convention? We think not. Wc cer
tainly hqve about as many a? can be
found in Chester county, is it bc-
cause our teachers are less enthusiastic
aid interested in theiy work and con
sequently less progressive and wide
awake? It looks this way, we must
say, but we hope it is not so^
Among the Justices.—The case of
pic State vs. Abney Barber on the
‘T The Normal Institute.
The Normal Institute of 1883 for the
white teachers of the State will assem
ble at Colombia on the 7th of August
next and will remain in session until
the 3lst. An able,, thorough and pro
gressive corp of professors have been
selected and will deliver lectures to the
teachers on the various , branches and
departments assigned them. Says the
superintendent: “Ample facilities will
be provided for instruction • in the
Theory and Practice of Teaching, and
a conspicuous part wilf £e assigned to
actual illustrations of the best qnd
moid approved methods. No pains
will be spared to render the exercises
of the Institute attractive and instruc
tive to teachers and to those who con
template the profession of teaching.
All the ordinary branches of a general
education will be embraced in the cur-
ricnlum, and there will be special
courses in algebra, physics and physi
ology for the benefit of those who may
elect to take them. Every effort will
be made-'to render the instruction
thoroughly practical in its character,
having always direct reference to its
application hi the daily work of the
school.”
Tuition in all the branches will be
free, and board can be obtained in
Columbia at greatly reduced rates.
Mr. Darby, the president of the
Colunibui Female College, in a circu
lar to the teachers, announces that the
female college will be open for the
board and entertainment of those of
tho teachers wiio may attend the ses
sion of the Institute. Roonis with
board in the college can be bad for
sixteen dollars for the session, if appli
cation is made in time.
The Charlotte, Columbia & Augusta
and the: Greenville & Columbia Rail
roads, for tho accommodation of tcadli-
ers, offer one fare tickets for the round
trip. Teachers are requested to pur
chase round-trip tickets at their re
spective stations upon representing
to the ticket agents thqi;,.they are en
titled to receive the benefits of the
reduced rates.
We give the above information for
the benefit of the teachers in the coun-
the world. This land cannot be pur
chased at any price. Much of the
country is malarious. In northeast
Texas the soil is good, and the country
well timbered and watered with fine
water* There are few negroes, and
these so indolent that no more are
wished. Farm wages are from fifteen
dollars per month to one dollar per
day, with "board and lodging. Crop
pers receive a half, furnishing nothing,
and being in some cases supplied with
board and lodging. Owing to the
great scarcity of laborers the farms are
small. Y'oung white men with their
only capital ip energy and muscle will
fin i this section a ne plus ultra; but
not so with regard to land-holders
wishing to cultivate more than they
themselves can attend to.
