Irving’s wus-tfm last of a list of gieat

as-his intention to remain paired with the manner in which he had presented

The House of Commons, on July
6th inst, by a Vote of 130 to 114, re
jected the bill in favor of female suf
frage. Although defeated, the advo
cates of the measure have quite a re
spectable following, and we would
not he surprised if some day the elec
tive franchise is given to women both
in England and in this country.
The duel alleged to have taken place
between John A. Kook., editor of the
Texas Siftings, and D. B. Shcalian
fdrns out to he a hoax. Many Enter
tain the opinion that the whole thing
is a practical joke, originated by Knox
in his own interest, and it is certain
that he had no intention of fighting.
The libel suit of E. J. Lehman, ’who
some time since entered suit for dam
ages against the Chicago Herald for
dProgaton statements with reference
to his character, lias obtained a verdict
of $-*0,000 against that journal. This
is dear newspaper gossip. Juries seem
to be as hard on the press as they gen
erally are on the railroad corportions.
Henry Ward Beecher lias entered
into a contract to deliver eight lectures
in Texas during the month of Septem
ber. Mr. Beecher is justly esteemed one
of the finest lecturers in this country,
and Texas is to he congratulated on
its good fortune in securing his ser

result hud been absolute and complete
success. Lord Coloridge quoted i let
ter from the Bishop of Durlmm saying
that Irving had 'doire much to purify
and exalt dramatic art. 'He had fol

it easier for'those coming after him in <
a dilficult profession, full of dangers
and temptations.
The splendor and brilliancy of the
occasion, the intellectual renown of
the gentlemen who took part ifi its
honors,etfc altogether the well-merited
tokens of the 4»igh esteem and regard
with which Mr. Irving is -biiM in the
literary circles of Ids native country,
and the most eloquent evidences of
England's appreciation of his dramatic
ability.

RATES, FOR ROUND TRIP.
Mr. Dibble’s recent coinmunicatio 1 ’*.' From ColatnWir .. .f3 tio
Mr. Carlisle considers his pros
pects for the Speakership quite as good
now as they Were when Congress ad
journed. Mr. Handall is ids only
Ibrnddab’.o rival for that position, and
the respective friends ot both parties
await the result with no little degree
of anxiety. It might not ho far wrong
to assert that the approaching election
for the Speakership of the next House
will in a large measure decide the
issues of the Presidential campaign of
next year.
to the Columbia Register defining his
position upon the approaching election
for the Speaker of the liousl of Ilup-
resentives, lias given rise to much
comment by the press of the State.
Viewed in the light of the discussion,
it is certainly safe to say that the Dem
ocratic party in South Carolina is
practically unanimous in its demand
for “tariff reform,” and it seems to be
equally true that the opinions now en
tertained by Mr. Dibble are in antag
onism to the \vishcs, and we believe,
the interest of ids immediate constitu
ents. For our part, we do not ques
tion ids right to follow the dictates of
his own enlightened judgment, and if
in doing so he let'is obligated to sup
port Mr. Randall for the Speakership,
lie has a perfect right so to do, but ids
his constituents are possessed of l ights
too, which in their judgment and dis
cretion may. be exercised ht the selec
tion of his successor. Mr. Dibble
claims that lie is really following the
instructions of the voices ot his district
in supporting Mr. Randall because he
is a Democrat. The Pennsylvanian is
nominally a Democrat, but it is con
ceded upon all sides that lie is not
Democratic on the tariff question, and
no candid and fair-minded man be
lieves for a moment that Randall at
The anti-monopolists arc in conven
tion in Chicago. In their platform
some good am! sound principles are
enunciated, and it may yet accomplish
some substantial good for the people
at large. Wc don’t admire much the
material that composes the body, nor
the general conduct of its members
while the convention is in session, hut
in the main the cause is a good one,
and should be encouraged by all
thoughful and intelligent men through
out the countrv.
Mr. Allen G. Thurman, Jr., son of
ex-Senator Thurman of Ohio, lias pub
licly announced his intention of voting
for Judge Forakcr, the Republican
nominee for Governor of that State,
lie seems to he miffed because the old
gentleman failed te ; control the recent
Democratic convention. Mr. Ward
was the pet of the Thurmans, and fail
ing to secure for him the nomination
the young hot-blood refuses his vote
and support to the more fortunate and
popular Judge Hoadly. The Democrats
will have a walk-over even without
the political in flue nee of young Thur
man.
Colonel Blythe, of Greenville, Tils
tendered his resignation as United
States marshal for the District of South
Carolina. His resignation causes con
siderable surprise throughout the
State, and the reasons assigned by
Colonel Blythe are that the department
examiners have detected irregularities
and illegal charges in the aeeotHits of
the deputies, and the department pro
poses to hold his account responsible
for theirs, besides he claims that the
office of marshal docs not suit him
and lie is anxious to return to his pro
fession. Mr. Blythe will continue to
discharge the duties of the oflfee until
his successor is appointed. It is not
yet known who will receive the ap
pointment. Colonel Blythe intends to
resume the practice of law in Green
ville.
ENGLAND HONORS THE DRAMA.
A magnificent banquet was given to
Henry Irving, the great English trage
dian, in London on the fourth inst.
Nearly six hundred guests sat down
to the table, and the splendid dinner
v as one seldom eeeu even on such
'brilliant occasions. Letter of regret
was read from Mr. Gladstone, stating
that it was i ^possible to be present,
and expressing his sincere regrets iu
consequence.
Lord Chief Justice Coleridge presid
ed at the banquet, and at the table of
honor sat Mr. Lowell, Master of the
Hulls, Sir James Hamnen, Mr. Tyn
dall, Mr. Brassy, Senator Hawley,
Lords Hardewicky Lennor Houghton,
Hagan, Fortescue, Bury, Londeshor-
ough and Barring and Mr. Toole, Hie
actor. Toasts were drank during the
evening to “The Queen”, “The Guest
heart favors a “tariff for revenue
only.” Then, should a Democratic
Congressman, elected by a constituen
cy whose known convictions arc in
favor of the tarifl'plank in the Demo
cratic platform vote for anil support
him for the important position of
Speaker of the next House? The
question answers itself. But Mr. Dib
ble says we cannot afford “to fight the
campaign of ’84 upon the tariff issue,
and if it is undertaken defeat is in
evitable”! Somebody is wrong, badly
and radically wrong, but we assert,
and are ready to stand by the asser
tion, thvv ie we refuse to tight the
campaign of ’84 upon the tariff issue,
defeat is inevitable! The Democratic
party lias avoided, dodged and strad
dled the only great living issue before
the country long enough, ami God
knows we have been defeated often
enough, and is it not high time for a
change of front?
If the party believes in the justness
and rectitude of its avowed principles,.'
will some of our weak-kneed brethren
tell us why we should not plainly,
boldly rtV.d unequivocally assert them
and go before the people willing to
stand or fall by our convictions? No
political party lias ever, can ever or

that is vacillating in its' policy and

But wc bclievtf the majority of the
American people are with us in our
demands for a reform of rh« lifi-iff.
The action of (lie last Congress and the
overwhelming defeat of the Republi
can party throughout the country at
the general election following upon its
adjournment, is proof sufficient of tliO
sentiments of the country upon that
question. If then it is right and poli
tic that the issue should be met and
