to the pupil who should achieve the
highest mark for recitations and dc-
portipept. Master John Parker, sou
of Mr. Eli W. Parker, one of the trus

successful contestant, and the award
gave general satisfaction. The second

Speaking of this school, a writer in
the Southern Educational Monthly
says: . ■ *
Ridgeway, Fairfield county, in our State,
has a new school-house which does her
people credit.-, # is 60x25 feet, has a neat
belfry, a good hell, improved patent desks,
a set of Cornell's outline, maps, is nicely
painted,•hafegme* blinds, ami .cost over
one thousand dollars. Good houses-induce
good teachttrji'to locate in a -town; good
teachers make good schools; and good
schools attract^)od citizens Messrs. R.
S. Desportes and A. F. Ruff, fyo of the
public school, trustees, were the main
movers io/£lrte enterprise. l TJ 1, 'y spared
Jielther their tiim; nor their .money. Were
there ^aich men on eveiy l^ard of trustees,
our public schools would grow in favor and
in usefulness.
The College Graduates.—By an
oversight the name of Mr..S. D. Dunn,
of tyijs jjlace, did not appear in tlie list
of disftiijruished students of tlie South
Carolina College. Mr. Dunn was car
rying aiT extra branch, and yet achieved
distinction in each of seven Rtmltes,
his. report giving a constellation of
“seven stars”, the largest number, \vc
believe, recorded for-any one. Fair-
.field lias ciuse to be proud of her
•representatives. Mr. Bnchanan in the
Senior, Mr. Dmin in the Sophomore,
and Mr. McMahon in the Freshman
•qlass, have placed themselves.among
the very first, both in scholarship and in
.deportment. They have tlie congratu-
•Jations of their, friends.

—The August-number is even morfT
brilliant than uOKal ; tlie variety apd
excellence of the contents arc biglffy
creditable to tlie editor, and commend
it not only to religious but to general
readers—they combine most edifying,
entertaining njud Instructive reading.
No. VII. of Religious Denominations

Charles H. Hall, I). D.; there are por

Moore, of Virginia, and Waiuwright,
of New- York. “The American Pil
grim iii Palestine,” by Dc <Lcon, and
“Arnoiig the Natives of thi North,”
by Lieutenant Scliwatka, are contin

cles by Ida Hervey, Rev. ML W. De
Hart, Alfrelon Hcrvoy, Rev. H. Bon

(harming stories ‘The City of the
Sun’’.,#nd “Mr. Burke’s Nieces” are

“Helpfulness,” and a sermon to the

The Glorious Fourth.—The anni-

observed in Winnsboro. There was
an .informal shooting-mateh in the
afternoon, gmoug .the gentlemen of
the town and a few from the coun
try. Thq sheeting was unusually fine.
Mr. Joo. D. M^CuiTey won the first
prize,;Mr. Jup. W- Aiken the second,
while Messrs. R. J. McCarley, H. B.
McMastcn4v!d tied for the
third. On. tlie second trial Mr. Rabb

morning, and the colored fire engine
company, wthgi-aflernoop. .Botli were
.out in full ranks and presented a very
creditable appearance.
. TnkEbiKvm Library.—Among the
Tpccnt issues of this unique, and in
fgspect to cheapness and beauty of
form aWtypography, really remarka
ble piljjlicjrtiou, are the following:
MArisfbtte/’ by Sir Alexander Grant;
“Plato/’ bvC.W,. Collins; “Horace,”
Ijy Theodore Martin. These are in tlie
famous and excellent “Ancient Clas
sics for English Readers” series, hero-
tqlbro. obiaiuehle only at the price of
one dollar each, but ijow: published in
tliis handsome form for fifteen cents
each, “'i^e J'lidiaj^ Soyg of Songs,”
by Edwin - author of “The
Eight of Asia,” is piilfljabed at six
cenls, the cheapest edition.heretofore
ismed being one dollar. We also have
the “Life of Alex. II. Stephens/* by
F\ H. Norto^author of “Life of Gen
eral Hancock,” and other works. It
contains an excellent imrtrait, ami a-
-fine illustration of “Liberty Hull,’
Mr. Stephens’s famous home. Though
a. copyright work, paying the usual
rpyalty to the author, -it is published at
the astonishing price of ten cents. The
last issue is Schiller’s celebrated “Song
of The Bell,” and “Hero and Lean-
4er,” all for two cents. These publi
cations are not sold by dealers general
ly, but only direct, by the publisher,
John B. Alden, 18 Vesey street, New
