The impression prevails in New

Another opinion seems to be that there

FAIRFIELD’S VINDICATION'.
HI
Our attention has been called to an
article in the Associate Jicformed
Presbyterian, headed “The Truth
about the Frecdmpn”. In it, it is said
tWt H edntribuiot to the Presbyterian
has been talking to Mrs. Richardson,
wife of the Rev. Willard Richardson,
Principal of the Fairfield Colored In
stitute In this place. There are many
statements in the communication of the
unknown contributor, which are in
deed startling, and so unfounded are
they all, that we might denominate
them sensational in (lie extreme.
Referring to the adverse circum
stances under which s*hie o* the col
ored teachers are compelled to do their
work, she is made to say: “/» a Jtre-
?c&, floorless lint, she has tanyht a
school of eiijhty colored children to
read, having only one book with
which to do all the teaching. ,f When
asked why there were not more hooks,
she replied: “Because they bad no
money with which to buy them.
Among them alt, there was not a pin or
button or a tape—their clothes were
held together with thorns.'’ . .
In the first place we do not believe
that Mrs. Richardson mer made such
statements either to that contributor
or any of his class or friends. We
do not believe it, T ccaufee we can say
authoritatively that her husband en
tertains very different opirioiff, and
has made statements of a widely differ
ent character. A few days before his
departure for his farm in Delaware,
Mr. Richardson called upon us and
volunteered to reply to the article of
Maggie Chappclle, which appeared in
The News and Herald some time
since. In the course of the conversa
tion lie said: “South OVolina, since
the Democrats have been in power,
has done even better by the colored
race in the matter of education than
could have been reasonably expected.”
11 And in Fairfield County,” lie con
tinued, il their educational facilities
are, under the circumstances; equal
to, if not superior, to those nj any
other section of the country, North or
South. I want the Northern peo
ple TO KNOW THESE FACTS.” This is
the statement of 4* Northern man, a
warm friend of the colored people,
amVtfith almost unrivalled opportuni
ties of knowing the truth of ins obser
vations^ Who can in the light of such
confessions give credence to the vapor-
ings of the Presbyterian’s correspond
ent. We do not believe it because
they arc wholly and utterly false. Wp

If there is within the confines of

ail these regions o'nk family of color-

that it is asserted of a school of eighty,
without “a pin or a button or tape,
with their clothes held together with

Mrs. Richardson or that correspondent
o’r whoever may be the author of the
story, will give us directions, so that
we may be able find the price and
the people in question.
Fail-field county is now making
eVery effort through her Board of Ex-

School Commissioner and the public-
spirited Trustees ‘ elected in eVery

classes of her citizens, irrespective of
color or party affiliation. ITiis is oil
