A Ns:^ tfoTKr;.—Mrs. Duvall has
begun the building oV a large ami com

the street and railroad from tlie pas
senger depot. The hotel when finished

Cotton at FeastkrVtli.e.—A gen-
tlemun fi'dnft Feasterville informs ns
tliat the crops in that section are not iii
prduiTsing as they usually are at this
season of the year. “The early cot
ton-,” he days, “is large and looks well
where a goc’d stand has been secured,
tmt tlie greater portion of the cotton
was late planting, owing to the bad
Uiwrther, and much of it in conse
quence of the drought is not up* and
What is out of the ground is small and
fetcklv.”
The Broom Drill Again—We are
reliably informed that some enterpris
ing ladles In town are still making
‘efforts to.get up a ‘'brPoin dtfli” in
the ficaV finture, and the probabilities
lire that success will yet crown their
efforts. It will take some time to ac
quaint the female soldiery with tl/P
manual of arMs, tihd consequently it
will be five or six weeks before the
public need expect to witness one of
their characteristic (best parades. Tlie
hovelty of the undertaking Ms a suf-
itfeient guaranty that it will not fall
through.
Reading-Room (?)—We are again
requested to call a meeting of the gen
tlemen df the town at the law office of
Mr. j. W. Hanahran at 8-.80 o’clock
to-night, for the purpose of making
another effort to organize a reading
c’nb. Several efforts have already
been Made to get itp a Meeting for this
purpose, but all of them heretofore
have been unsuccessful. One full
ineeting is all that is necessary to make
the undertaking a success. Upon the
list bf subscribed m’etoberi there are
over fifty names—fully enough to war
rant immediate steps in the direction
'contemplated, if the members will take
the trouble to mtect onc'6 and organ
ize-. Surely an hour this evening cau

Tariff Tracts.—We are in receipt
of several ^Tariff tracts” from some
Unknown frieud. Amoilg them is a
sjieech upon the “Footprints of the
British Lion,” “Science based on As
sumptions,” by the Hon. Win. D. Kelly,
and “Ho# Protection Affects the
Farmer,” by the Hon. Thomas D. Dud
ley. We have hot as yet subjected
tlreift to a close and searching examina^
lion, but enough has been done in that
direction to warrant us in saying that
they are unsound in theory and in
hvery sense Undemocratic. The fol
lowing is ft closing sentence of Mr.
Dudley's speech: “If on the other
mini you wish to preserve your own
prosperity and desire also to see your
Vottntry coutiliiib prosperous and groat,
stand by tlie American system of Pro
tection, wfiteii has placed the agricul
turists of the liidled States among the
first iu the wohldt” Bosh I
items moat dEDAR cAckir.
—Owing Id Unavoidable fcirenm-
stances iii this delay of agriculture this
year our planted arc unusually active
at present.
—The picnie at Dr. S. W. lleokhurt's
mill, on the 28rd ult.* was in bVery
hespect art ei\jbyable affair. The par
ticipants wefts kelebt and social.
—During the late freshet on the
bight of the 8ist nit. the south abnt-
tdeilt of the Horse Crbisk bridge on
the road leading frorti Wibnsboro to
Ooinmbia was utterly tom asunder b\
the dashing Watcrfl;
—A great acreage of corn land lying
on the Waters of Big and Little Cedar
Creeks* Persimmon Fork artd Horse
Creek has been flooded* and it is
tbongbt safest to plant anew almost
entirely* without regard to the few
surviving hills of the valuable bread
stuff. Fences and farm bridges on
low lands were swept aiar. Mdch
bats was lost.
—Among the late arrivals to otir
Vicinage from Florida ai’e Mr. and Mrs.
dacob Leitucr, thu; sou Jas, D, Leit-
momehts preparations, all were in
ranks and in readiness for the annrtal
parade of tlie company. To the engine
Wef-e hitched two white steeds, and
before beginning a photographic scene
was taken by Mr. Cronenberg.
It was a source of regret that the
horses to the engine refused to
and it wftl found iieteessary to leftve
behind; but despite this unfortunate
circumstance tlie parade was quite
creditable indeed. All Write neatly
aiid elegantly costumed, and the gen
eral appearance and efficiency of the
company were noted with genuine
gratification by all who witnessed the
splendid spectacle.
At 6.30 o’clock a meeting was held
in the cofirt'-lVoVise and tlie following
officers were elected for the ensuing
year:
President—J. M. Beaty.
Vice-President—T. H. Ketchirt.
Secretary—J. P. Caldwell.
Treasurer—C. M v Chandler.

The important pall of thti interest
ing programme was yet behind, and
thb reStiVe boys whiled away, as best
they could, the interval between the
acts. But the hour came, the clock
struck nine and in they marched, two
abreast, fthd in a shorter space of time
than the event could be chronicled, the
loaded and groaning tables in the Thes
pian Hall were filled with forty hun
gry red-shirts and a half dozen ciVil-
i.uis. Around the cares and troubles 6t
life ihc mantle of a sweet oblivion was
thrown, and overflowing hilarity, and
jolly good hnmor were the
spirits df the hours. To eat, everything
was there; to drink—Welt, we have
heard of no one who was at all thirsty
upon that occasion.
Many were the nice and sentimental
toasts offered, and the fervent speakers
responded as they Should with their
accustomed spiiit and feelirtg. The
following tviil give some idea of the
character df this part of tire pro
gramme:
