A New York writer predicts that
the popularity of Coney Island is on
'the wane,'ami says the day is probably
not far distant when it will cease to be
a place of resort for the masses of New
York city and Brooklyn. We have
not learned the sources of his informa
tion.

an additional plea in his favor. Lord
Hartington, the brother of Lord Cav
endish, the story asserts, refused to
entertain the idea$>r 41 moment, and
firmly insisted upon the execution,
and consequently the law was allowed
to take its course. Kelly protested
a&rifcistfhe memorial for a reprieve
and met his late with the SMic* indiffer-
dat.e, encc of an Irish patriot. He insisted
on having it understood that he ad
hered to the statements made at the in
terview with his mother and sister,
and that he neither admitted nor de
fied complicity in the murder of Lord
Cavendish and Bnrke—that such com
plicity had not been proven against
him, and if the British Government
chose to assume the responsibility of
hangingthrm, he was perfectly willing
to die for the Irish cause.
God knows enough have suffered for

•General Grant lias expressed great
'Interest in the Southern Exposition to
be held at Louisville, Kentucky, in
August. He generously offers to loan
n large number of art objects, collected
by him in different parts of the world,
for exhibition in the art gallery during
the*entire period that the exposition
will be open. This is very kind of
General Grant, find we believe that
such evidence ofgoed feeling will be
appreciated by the whole Southern
people.
A new' system of enumerating time
by numbering the hours consecutively
from 1 to 2*4, is meeting with some
approval. An Ohio railroad company
have adopted it, and the last train
hcardTrom left at 23.15 o’clock. AVe
can really see no objections to the pro-
posed change, on the contrary it would
be the most natural method of measur
ing time and would be much simpler
'than repeating rfrom one to twelve
twice during the twenty-four hours.
IVhat would conservatives say to the
innovation?

The New York #«n, speaking of the
present condition of flic Democratic
party says: “It is a very noticeable
fact that the Democratic States include
every party of the Union and all its
‘extremes, North, South, Last and
West. This is h* first time since
the civil tvstt' when the strength of that
party has been distributed over so vast
an area. California, Connecticut, In
diana, Michigan, Nevada, New York,

North. The old sectional lines arc
gone.
Major Robert BinoTiam, of the
“Bingham School”, will address the
students of Davidson Goilege Monday
night, the 18th inst.,' on “The Physi
cal, Intellectual and Moral Culture of
Man.” The Journal-Observer says'of
him: “Major Bingham is a pleasant
and interesting speaker, and those
who have heard him once will bo sure
to desire that pleasure again. His
vide reputation, his earnestness And
his extensive knowledge give him a
command over an audience, which a
much more brilliant delivery would
fail secure.”
or (hat all are “too busy” to let many
readers of your paper know what wc
are doing. In this locality wc hear the
rattle of reapers, the whistling of
engines, the roar of threshers and the
“gee” and “haw” in every direction,
Surely, w^th these indications of life
and energy together with the natural
advantages and curiosities with which
wc arc surrounded, there is “some
thing to write about.”
We have a flourishing Sabbath
School that meets every Sabbath eve-
nhtg&t four o’clock. Also a prayer
meeting weekly—both of which are
wcilding an influence destined to live
after the present generation •shaM be
consigned to mother earth. We also
have one of the best schools in the
county, which lias for the past four
months bcoii tasaght. by the efficient
and competent Mr. W. J. Keller. 'On
last Friday the patrons and a few of
the friends were invited to hoar a re
view of the “Oak Grove School,”
which we think indicated careful and
competent training. The entire school
acquitted themselves ’creditably, and
reflected great honor on their teacher.
After the exercises * sumptuous re
past was spread by the ladies, which
bespeak “plenty at home” and reflect
ed credit on their skill in pnqwrjng it.
The company then repaired to the
bare ball ground, to witness a match
between the Lpnc Star and the Oak
Grove clubs, which was Bill of inter
est and excitement, and rest)lied in a
decided Victor*' for tlic school-boys.
Then and there, right before our en
vious eyes, floral tributes of rare and
beautiful varieties were heaped upon
the proud little victors by the fair and
beautiful ladies. But, three cheers for
the ladies! May they do likewise
when the victory is ours—which will 1
be on the next occasion. Novice.

UNDERTAKING !
It is generally believed in Charlotte
and throughout Mecklenburg county
that the killing of J. G. Sitton by
Shields was a foul and brutal murder.
The evidence will probably dcvelope
the fact that the accusation of his sis
ter’s seduction was only a cover, and
that his real purpose was (o annihilate
Sitton’s testimony in a case pending
against him for house-burning. The
feelings of the community have as
sumed a dangerous and restless shape,
and fears are entertained that the
slayer may yet bo lynched. Efforts of
counsel will doubtless bo made to
have the venue changed on the grounds
that ho cannot have a fair trial in
Charlotte.
A Paper Cross-tie.—D. R. V.
Goetchins has received a patent on his
invention for a railway cross-tie. Tlic
obiect of this invention is to provide a
suitable and cheap substitute for the
wooden cross-tie heretofore used for
the support of railroad tracks. It con
sists of a cross-tic, or sleeper, con
structed of sheets of paper of straw-
board, applied one upon another,
cemented together and compressed>,
There is also connected with this tie,
or sleeper, a tie-rod or bar, rigidly se
cured thereto, find having Us extremi
ties provided With a chair or shoe, in
terposed between the sleeper and the
track. This tie cun be made watci-
proof and durable by any of the well
known processes. When used on
tramways or railways having light
rolling stock and motive power, the
rail may be spiked or bolted direct to
the described sleeper in the same man*
ner ns is customary with wooden
sleepers. When the tic is applied to
railroads using heavy engines and cars,
then (lie strain is obviated by u*iu:'the
heavy iron or steel bar previously mcn-
