essay in the following words: “Civil
society, however, may reasonably reg

it is likely to be injurious to the public

From liradstreet's for June 2nd wc
gather tie following facts in regard to
the cotton crop. The report to Brad-
street's consists of mail returns to May
18, and telegraphic advices to June 2.
Including telegrams, the replies recciv
ed nnmber 1,073. These come from
692 counties, representing 97 per cent,
of the cotton growing regions, and is
tlie most satisfactory cotton report yet
received from correspondents of that
journal in the South. The reports as
to acreage show an average increase of
6 per cent., tlie largest increase being
in Texas. Tlie total acreage in cotton
calculated from the decreased acreage
of 1882 is 15,984,677 acres. Advices,
both by mail and telegraph, indicate
that the condition of the crop cannot
be regarded as any more than fair, the
season being backward, and the weath
er not averaging above “fair.”

Messrs. Editors) Having recently

and heard. In going on tlie two rail

veyance, I was enabled to see some
what of the growing crops. I found
the wheat crop on an average tolerably
fair, as well as the fall sowing of oats.

planting, hut about a fifth of tlie crop
planted late and not np yet. Mlidh of
tlie low lands on the water courses are
not yet planted, Owing to the want of
rain. But little corn has been sold to
planters in the town of Newberry this
year. I saw several wagon loads of
fodder on the streets for sale. This
was an unusal sight—a proof of the
prosperity of onr State.
The i^zeusof Newberry have been
