The trial of the partiel charged with
participation in the Phoenix Park mur
ders ended on Thursday last. James
Mullet!, Edward O’Brien Edward Me
Caffrey, Daniel Delaney, William
Maroney and Thomas Doyle, all of
whom had pleaded guilty to the charge
of conspiracy to murder, were arraign
ed in coart for sentence on Thursday
morning. Tlte first five mentioned
were each sentenced to ten years’ penal
servitude and Doyle to five years’
penal servitude. The Crown decided
to drop the criminal charge against
McCaffrey of having participated in
the murder of Mr. Burke.
Opinions vary as to the character of
the investigations just closed. By
those who claim to sympathize most
deeply with Ire land! in ftef wrongs
and sufferings it is of course alleged
that the triah throughout were cbarac-
terized with the rankest injustice. On
the other hand it is claimed that the
condtetnned men got only what they
deserved. Certain it is that the
PlKEtiix Park murders were acts of
startling lawlessness, and it is not at
all clear that the prosccntion got boh!
of tfre parties- Perhaps tlfts
best criticism of the character of the
Dublin proceedings ivtbat el the New
York Herald, as follows^
The special panel summoned to try the
Phoenix Park murderers and other miscre
ants in Dublin was yeeterdk? dismissed,
and the thanks of all right-thinking Irish
men will be awarded tb them for the vtotfi
which they have so courageously and' hon
estly performed. Their ready- acquttftd of
Fitzharris, the carman, on : the- graven
charge of muttisv proves their entire im
partiality, and it is perhaps to be regretted
that the prosecution-should instantly have
tried! Fitzharris on the lighter charge and
toai-en conviction lie should have been |
sentenced to the utmost penalty of the la#.
A little generosity would do no barm evem
in so extreme a matter as this. Otherwise
the Crown officers do not seem to have
•oaineo their power to toe disadvantage of
the prisoners, while the verdicts of the Jury"
prove Mint the law-abiding Inhabtants of
DehHn have no kind of sympathy with
a^; isslnation. and that tiwee who pretend
(hat the trials were unfairly conducted are
onor, in aid of the reuding-rooin.
